Treating upper respiratory infections

I only gave mine 1cc of VetRX but I had much better results with Tylan.

That is a LOT of VetRx to give a bird. It is intended to be diluted with water per the package instructions and then you would only give a bird a few drops of that, or rub on the nose. And, as Kathy mentioned, it is not an antibiotic, that's why you had better results with Tylan. VetRx contains camphor, it's similar to humans using a menthol product to help a stuffy nose, it's not going to cure anything.

Can't navigate this site well but have a question re respiratory illness. My rooster has sinusitis. Infectious fluid taken from sacs under eyes and eyes stay filled with thick, sticky watery fluid. Was given Terramycin for eyes and put on Baytril. Has not helped. Eating and drinking and crowing. Not very active. Maybe because confined in my utility room. Any suggestions?

My 7 week old silkie is repeatedly shaking her head but Im wondering if it might have something going on with its ears? Other thank her head shaking she eats, drinks, and has lots of engery.
Here is a video of her head shaking Please Help

Hi everybody,

I'm trying to treat my 18 week old pullet Pancake Junior (daughter of Pancake - named for how flat she became when brooding the eggs!), PJ is the third pullet yet to come down sick with a respiratory virus. I had the vet autopsy the previous one and he thought it was coryza, however there's been no swelling or smelliness around the head and he wasn't 100% sure as he didn't send it in to a lab - just knew it was an infection of sorts. When PJ became sick, I took her in and now the vet is thinking it might be mycoplasma. PJ has now been on Lincomysin/ Spectinomysin, orally, for almost 7 days. PJ stopped eating and drinking about 3 days ago and we're getting liquids into her with an eyedropper/ syringe. So here's my question: when do I call it quits and just let her go? How long do these illnesses last? If I knew she would turn a corner in a day or two I'd persevere, but if recovery is going to take a lot longer than that, I'm not sure I want to put her through it. Thanks everybody for your help and thanks for this great thread. PS I'm in Australia, so getting ahold of Tylan or the medicine for Coryza can't be done in a regular feed store - you have to go to a vet (and since we've already been twice I can't go again)

Hi everyone, I have to tell you I am a firm believer of Vet RX. My BuffOrpington was real sick last week. She sounded terrible she was coughing really hard and sounded wheezy and I actually thought she was going to kick off and it came on her real fast. I'm around my chickens enoughthat I evidently caught it at a good time. I rubbed Vet Rx under her wings and put it under her beak and I put a few drops in her waterer. That worked real well for me, you could see overnight what a difference it made in her and after three days she was perfectly fine and still is doing great.I haven't tried any of the other medicines you were talking about but this one worked great for me. Maybe I was just lucky, and like I said I caught it right away. Good luck with your chicken Australia. I hope it recovers soon.

This is great advice! I am in the same predicament with my chickens: bought a pullet from store and added her to my 4 babies (now 14 weeks old) and realized she had a rattling noise, sneezing, coughing etc... now a week later 2 of them are sick with same and very tame in behavior, did not come to greet me today. Just ordered tylan 50 tonight and syringes. Will follow your advice!
