Speaking of fun turkey hens...I turn my dogs out before dawn. Each morning as I pass their coop I hear quiet little hen trills coming from their pen. They don't get off their roost...Just sort of a sleepy good morning chatter.

My girls use their ADA designed boxes. After I constructed them I would carry them to it & set them in it. So they would get used to them. If I found one acting like they were trying to lay somewhere else I'd pick her up & install her in their box. After a week or so, they where used to the boxes , began using them. I think they like 'em. They were designed to give them some privacy, but allow a view of the pen, and the turn around ratio is large enough to not interfere with their tails. I hate scruffy tails!!

Just got a report from my turkey sitter. Her text read: " Your turkeys are killing each other". Seems they are having the annual egg laying spat. I'll be home tomorrow. Last trip to Montana!! Yippee! Although, I must say, it's very pretty here in Missoula.

Finally home. Daisy on my lap. All is right in the world. Both hens have facial bites & bruising. Dang it! They must have really gone at it in my absence. No wonder their sitter was freaking out. Oh...and the owl is back. Guess the romance in another yard didn't work out. Went over to talk to it .... it fluffed up at me. And stretched each wing out. Well...its good to be home...

Cleaned my turkey girls faces off. They were a mess. I'm so disappointed in their behavior. My turkey sitter is still freaked out. Ran out as soon as I got home. They were both exhausted. Sat down on the back steps. One sat on either side. No fighting...just being pitiful. I washed their peck wounds. They let me. They calmly went to roost. Hoping the they've settled it!

That's a great idea! Wonder if my girls would want these for their strolls through the neighborhood. It would make them more visible to folks in cars. It's odd enough seeing a turkey walking down a sidewalk. If they were wearing matching outfits we may end up with folks running off the road.

I wish I knew more about owl behavior. If anyone has a thought...let me know. Yesterday and just now, as soon as I go out & sit in my chair, the owl flies out of the magnolia & perches on the branch above us. It's usual perch. Now mind you, my whole flock has been loose all day. The only difference is me showing up. And here's another weird thing. Both yesterday and just now...a squirrel ran up to it... causing the owl to fly to another branch. Anyone understand this behavior? How can a squirrel run off an owl? And as soon as I go plant myself out with the girls it flies over. Someone tell me what's going on in this owls head? Oh, it is beautiful when it flies over! And silent. So weird such a big bird can fly without a sound!
