I just spent way too much time looking at these videos & pics of turkey mommas!! Loved Rosabelles video...what a sweet momma!! Its amazing how careful she is with those babies!!
And Cuddles! Again, I find it fascinating how the girls sort out babysitting duties. It takes a village!!
Alicia....is this the Snakes first hatch? Shes a fierce momma! Wonder if she'll ever let you around the babies! LOL!

Don't know how you guys are doing it....I'd be wasting way too much time watching those mommas with their babies!!

So Daisy is still laying a late afternoon egg. As soon as she waddles off to the nest box, Annie wants to hop in my lap. Annie doesn't have the finesse Daisy does....she lands with a thud. Not sure why all of a sudden she decided to become a lapper....in 110 weather mind you. And Daisy! Dang it! She has developed a habit of taking a quick dust bath, not shaking out the dirt then immediately hops in my lap....dirt & dust flying everywhere. Blah!!

Alicia....just get a chair & sit in the pen with them. Neither of mine were tame when I got them either. They soon got over me being around & realized I might have a treat. Now they are both lap hens. To counteract boredom while sitting in a hot poopy pen, consider a good book. My chickens are real friendly too. I still make a point of sitting in the yard with them at least once a day. I enjoy their company. Daisy acts as a desk for my laptop.

Well we are having an unexpectedly nice weekend! Cooler & lower humidity. And the birds & dogs are reveling in it! It interesting how the depressive heat & humidity affects them. Daisy has been dancing around....twirling & twerking....and my coonhound pup is bouncing around like the big oaf of a puppy he still is! And I'm able to stay out for more than 5 minutes before getting crabby! Yippee! We have rain coming tonight & tomorrow. That's good too! Hose watering the garden seems to sustain things...but a nice rain really makes a difference.
Speaking of the hose....Daisy had to play in it. Got drenched, proceeded to the dust bath spa & ended up a mess. Then she had the nerve to come over looking for a lap nap. Really bird?

Sfgwife...you should see Daisy standing on the grooming table...shes easier to groom than some of my dogs.

Mowed the front yard this evening. Daisy & Annie were in back in my garden. Calmly mowing a strip, husband/wife with baby in carriage walking down sidewalk toward me. They both started pointing & yelling, scared me to death....turned around....Daisy was airborne, just about head height. I have no idea why she dive bombs me when I'm mowing! I've been penning her when I mow the back. She must have seen me start it up in the drive. Shook up the happy couple. They didn't know what that big blue thing hurtling through the air was. They know her now...

Get a copy of the APA & read the SOP for turkeys. I believe there are only 7 (may be wrong here) recongnised turkey varieties. I do know Blue Slate & Bourbon Red are acceptable. Ralphie & Holmes might be able to shed more light on what judges are looking for. This time of year there are all kinds of fairs going on. Might want to try & find a few in your area. Don't be shy about talking to judges about the finer points of the birds they use. Normally the judge goes down the aisles solo or with someone to record for them, but I've asked judges twice if I could tag along to audit. Both were gracious enough to let me! And boy was it a great learning experience.
