SFGWife....was wondering where you were!! Missed ya.

Got home to find Annie all curled up and asleep right out side the backdoor. She looked so cute! I'd like to think she was waiting for me....but most likely she was just getting away from Daisy. Daisy was out foraging. They aren't actively fighting. ..yet. Just threatening looks and random pecks. I've stocked up on beer. The only thing I can do during spring hormone season.

OMG....we may get snow (flurries) this weekend. It's been hovering around 70 here for the last several days. I'm so bummed.

No major fighting between the girls yet. They are giving each other the evil eye & an occasional peck. Havent had to crack open a beer yet.

I plopped both of them up on the grooming table yesterday. They had both taken baths in their shavings & had junk in their feathers. Like I said, they are easier to groom than the coonhound! But....I have to admit...they are pudgy! Is that common? For them to gain weight in the winter? They free feed and get their evening peck of BOSS, same regime as during the summer. Maybe its middle age spread??

Today's visitor. We had a face to face encounter at about a 4' to 5' distance.

It just looked at me as if to say "Why are you disturbing my sleep?"
R2elk....that's an amazing photo! Was he eyeballing your fowl....or taking a nap? They can be hard to spot if just sitting in a tree.

Friend of mine has custody of one of the state rehab great horned owl used for education purposes. He was hit by a car at 3 months old. The vet didn't think he would recover so wasn't concerned about bonding. Obviously he could not be released. She has had him for over 6 years. Couple years ago he broke a tether as she was taking him in to be weighed. We searched for him for 12 days. He never hunted. We weren't sure if he could find food. Never has flown much. Plus it was August & hot as heck. It was well advertised that he was missing. We had leads from all over the neighborhood that we followed up on...all at night. Cant tell you how many times we tripped over stuff. We had no idea if he would come to her, even if we were able to locate him. We also figured one of us would break an ankle. Long story....but he was spotted by a neighbor recognized by the remaining tethers. We cleared away all the spectators. It was her & him and a bunch of dead mice. After an hour he drifted to the ground after a mouse & she...all 5 foot of her...tackled him. He was caught! He had lost weight. He had to be rehydrated. She started feeding slowly. And he's back to being a happy hooter educating kids. We still can't get over the fact he was found & recaught. After 12 days we were discouraged & figured he may be a goner.
