Personally I feel your dark egg is either way further along than you thought (like day 17+) or it's a bad egg. Your other pictures are clear enough that this is not a lighting issue. Otherwise I'd say get a brighter flashlight. I don't think blue eggs are any more difficult to candle than a medium brown egg. You got something else going on with this egg. I'd be sniff testing it for sure. If it starts cracking or seeping get it out!

17+ days would be nice... They are still in their first week though. No bad smells or anything leaking as off yet. I'll keep a close eye on it. Thanks for the suggestions.

I know. But I thought you purchased or had the eggs shipped in? They may have collected an older egg that was partially incubated. Stranger things have happened.

If they're your own eggs and fresh collected I agree. Not an egg close to hatching.

Sorry for the lack of responses folks, I've been a little busy and pretty sick this weekend.

So it is day 4 for the O Shamo, and day 6 for the others.

I've done some candling, but I don't really see much activity to be honest. Some of the shells are a bit difficult to see through. The O Shamo though are pretty easy to see.

This is one of the Black Australorp eggs. The pictures not so great, but there are small veins forming.

So what does it mean when an egg is dark? I don't mean to shell. I have at least three eggs that I can see light coming up through the air sac, but everything between the sack and the light is just a shadow.

Oooh, do we see a tiny embryo in Pic #2 here??? Or is it too soon?

I'm pretty sure that is an embryo! At least going by the picture chart I was looking at.

You're good. Just stick to the plan. Sniff check and keeping an eye on it.
Best advice I've received on incubating is that it's not for the faint of heart. Just when you have one variable figured out a curve ball comes at you.

Most of your eggs look wonderful. Beautiful development and right on track.

From that picture it does look like an egg farther along in incubation to me. . but it's so hard to tell from pictures.

I must disagree. I wouldn't if I hadn't witnessed it first hand.
That egg isn't bad, isn't further along it is just blue.
Blue eggs most certainly are more difficult to see into, they present as solid from day 1 until hatch unless the egg is unusually porous.

I get what you're saying. It is interested that all 3 would candle the same. I'm used to candling Marans eggs. My experience with blue eggs is from Easter eggers but they seem about the same color as the OPs. I've never had an issue candling them. I'll see if I can find a pic of a blue one I've candled. I struggle much more with candling porous eggs regardless of color. I have some home breed Olive Egger hens that will be laying next spring. I'm very curious how they will candle.

I'm always open to learning. Looking forward to watching this hatch and seeing those beautiful babies when they hatch.
