Trouble Killing Mites

I gave up on DE and went back to Ag Lime and Konk.
Three well placed squirts of Konk on each chicken and a spray down of the coops/nestboxes/perches and I am mite free for almost a year, sometimes even longer depending on the weather.

Where did you get those and how do you apply? Is it a spray that you put straight on the bugs? I have a prevention spray that I put on all the chickens every few months. Apparently, it didn't work! haha

Ooo! I think I'll order that. So you don't spray it directly on the bugs?

Also, is it a preventor only, or can it kill existing bugs?

Ivomec is just a drop or two on the bare skin of the bird - its just like using frontline for dogs - and it will de-worm them at the same time. It gets into their blood and will kill blood feeding pests like mites. It won't generally work for lice as lice feed on dander and skin - not blood.

Frontline is what I actually used for the chickens. It was recommended to me by a friend of mine thats had chickens all her life.

Yes, I've heard that too, but don't know the doseage. I had forgotten about it until after I picked up some Ivomec

For some reason, It just always slips my mind .... even when talking about it !

Well.. it doesn't work apparently so I wouldn't worry about getting it lol. I treated the birds with it again a week ago when I found the problem but it hasn't helped.

Would it be bad to try to spray it directly onto the mites? Or maybe just the skin in that area? The mites are only on the back of their neck.

If you prefer spraying the insects directly - try the adams flea and tick spray. The Ivomec is too concentrated and you'd overdose them. The dose is 1cc per 22lbs - and most just break it down by weight - in general - equalling the .5 cc for large birds and .25 for small. Also, I'm not sure but I think the Ivomec doesn't mix well with water because it is designed to be absorbed quickly through the skin. Do a search on here - there may be more info on that route - ...

Well I just put a little bit of Frontline in the biggest problem area. Then I rubbed it all over the mites with my figures. I was afraid of over-dosing so I used as little as I could. Hopefully that does the trick.. if it doesn't work I won't re-apply. I'll just go find the adams flea spray. Hopefully our pet store has it.

It is a preventor and kills exsisting bugs.

I was told by the poultry club members to use one quick spray under each wing, one at the top of the vent and one between the legs, towards the front of the bird.
Also clean your coop out really well, spray all the cracks and walls, nest boxes, perches etc..
Also spray any new birds joining your flock.
One can should last a year or more depending on the size of your flock and coops. I paid under $20 for a can.
