How does the crested mutation happen in non-crested breeds? Is a specific gene? Or a cluster of genes?

You get more patience the more you hatch. Ducklings can take FOREVER! Internal pip one day, wait 24 hours external pip, wait another 24 hours and then zip.

I'm not really sure, I think it is just one gene that causes it though I haven't really looked into it in noncresteds.

I'm pretty sure it is. And it's dominant; so one parent must be crested for a duckling to have a crest. Size of crest doesn't matter. But I don't know how it started.
