Greetings, everyone! I am Emily Robertson, known on the Canadian poultry sites for many years now as TruNorth. I'm the owner of True North Heritage Hatchery located in Armstrong BC.

I've been keeping chickens since we bought our first house (1971) that came with a flock of Light Sussex in the back yard. I was not happy about that at first because their run was where I wanted my organic garden to be, but after a few weeks I was hooked and I've had chickens ever since.

I managed to keep my chicken flocks small while we raised our kids, moved to bigger farms and I worked as a professional Biologist. But upon retirement I wanted something interesting to do, and restoring the Light Sussex breed to genetic health was a delightful project! Along the way I met several other old chicken keepers who were doing similar things with their favorite breed, and Henry Noll who had created a fabulous meat bird in PA. The hatchery started as a co-op to sell the healthier chicks that my friends and I were producing, and the hatchery bought Henry's breed, renamed at his request to Mistral Gris.

The way we keep these heritage breeds true to their original livestock roles and at the peak of health is with Production Breeding, which is based on quantitative genetics (not Mendelian) and requires large flocks. Anyone interested in this, give me a shout!

You are welcome to check out the hatchery at www.TrueNorthFarm.ca but please note we do not export chicks or hatching eggs.
