We live in western Pennsylvania.
Not sure what it is. Wondering if its toxic to chickens. Our girls use it as a place to hide. The more curious pullets are jumping and trying to eat it...

I would like to know as well. I am sure we don't have those here, but if I was a chicken those red/purple berries sure look yummy! :drool

Do you have a local nursery/gardener who might know what it is?

"chickens can eat elderberries, however, we are dealing with a toxic plant here, so caution is mandatory! The stems, leaves, roots, and unripe berries of the elderberry plant all contain a compound of cyanide-inducing glycosides which are toxic"

Sooo... I guess as long as they dont eat any unripe berries or leaves they'll be fine. If it were me, I wouldn't let them near it, but it's your choice!

After reading this I, personally would dig those bushes up. But that is MHO
