TULSA area Cluckers

Im with prariehen74301! A more local thread!

Cathiesue, I saw you on the thread for Sweedish flowers. Do you breed your own SF chickens? I am really wanting to get a pair hopefully this spring.

Heres a question for you all. What auctions/sales are the best to go to around here? I sure am starting late in the year for chickens!!!

I just set some Swedish Flowers in my incubator. I'll keep them over the winter so I can choose a pullet, but I'll most likely have a pair if you'd be interested, too.

Lonnieandrinda,
Wow. Claremore sounds like they are a bunch of grouchy poultry haters! Were luckily not in city limits and somewhat in the country. Also our neighbors on each side have chickens of their own. One of them owning 60+ birds. I appreciate the heads up! I really hope no one makes a stink for any of us.

Cathiesue,
How are the Roos? Are they very aggressive? Would you trust one around children? I really want either a flower Roo or a cream legbar (spelling?) Roo. Deciding on "the one" man for my girls is pretty tough! I give myself until spring to figure this out.

It really is Rogers County, I've been told the city of Claremore has a hens only policy like Tulsa. It just boggled my mind that in such a rural county you can't keep poultry in your backyard!

But this gives us a lot of room- we will have Agricultural Zoning on our 9 acres, and we will be in Wagoner County which is much more livestock friendly. We will be getting some goats and some Australian Shepherds (got 1 puppy already), and several more breeds of chickens- so exciting! The neighbors all seem really nice, too, they've come over and introduced themselves one of the times we were down looking over the property.

Meet Merlin, isn't he gorgeous?!

Merlin is a pretty boy!!

Someone asked about auctions, Chupps is the largest. I believe it is the first sat of every month.

I have been to chupps a few times. Getting to that time of year to take hot coffee and bundle up!! I haven't ever looked over the chickens there. We always went to look at all the other junk there was. Lol

Oh Merlin is such an adorable boy! I would LOVE to get a dog but my husband is all anti dog. Your puppy is really handsom!

I hear you on the other junk, I went with no intenetions of buying anything & went home with a duck house.......wait for it........I also don't own ducks!

I will be looking to hatch some chicks in the spring once I decide towhat direction I am going with my flock. I am in the Muskogee area & will be raising a small group of meaties for the first time next month.

I grew up in Claremore back in the 60`s when the population was around 5,000 and now it`s near 20,000. Times change and so do the rules. I used to live across the street from the old Junior High School on the corner of 11th and Chickasaw....our neighbors probably had 100 or so chickens. The McClellans up on Park and Sioux had several cows....back in the day folks like that were Grandfathered in and could keep livestock. If you live outside of the Claremore city limits in Rogers County and you are not in a subdivision with restrictions you can pretty much raise whatever you like.

Yes and no. We are in Rogers county at the bottom left corner of the map, 145th and Pine St. There are no restrictions in our neighorhood, it is an older neighborhood that is Tulsa addresses but Catoosa schools. If you call the Roger's County Planning Commission and ask them the zoning laws on poultry, they will tell you poultry is illegal on residential lots in the "Jurisdiction" area of the map. I even asked if they allowed hens only and they said NO- NO POULTRY. Can you try it? Absolutely. If you just have a few hens and maybe a rooster or two, and don't get any neighbor complaints, you probably won't have any problems. Others in our neighborhood have chickens, and there are even other roosters that we can hear. But WE were the ones that got complained about. We were told we had 3 months to remove the poultry from our property and if there were any complaints after that 3 month time they could potentially send animal control to seize our chickens. Literally. We had about 30 chickens total at the time, including 5 roosters.

It is true that city laws trump county laws when it comes to animal zoning, so yes the city of Claremore does allow hens.

Anyway we decided we wanted more room and to look for a new house. BUT as we want to have several breeds and run 5-10 roosters a repeat of this scenario was not a risk we wanted to take, so we chose not to look in most of Rogers County. Any of the houses we liked that were outside the jurisdiction line were too much of a commute for my husband. So we chose to buy in Wagoner County instead. This place will be great for us, I don't feel "run out" of Rogers County or anything like that I just don't want people to assume they won't have problems like we did and then have to rehome their chickens due to neighbors.

ETA: they did tell us we could apply for an exception to the zoning law. But based on my research the chances of being granted an exception are low, AND they can be revoked at any time for no reason at all. We also would have probably had to make a promise to a certain number of roosters and/or chickens to get that exception. As we were hoping to find a place with more land anyway, it was not a fight that we felt worth fighting. Our time was better spent looking for a new house that had the land and zoning we wanted.

My husband just pointed out where our place is and it looks to be in their jurisdiction.

Still were far out enough in the country that I hope that no one complains. Not to mention our two neighbors that have chickens as well. We don't plan on a lot of chickens, but our 60+ chicken neighbor with I don't know how many roosters may get a complaint. Hope not. That is just so dumb that they are such chicken Nazi's.

I hope you enjoy your new place! Good luck!

Thanks! The closing went seamless today! Then we went out to the house tonight to look around better (we had a family member brush hog the back lot this morning) and holy toledo something happened to the living room ceiling! I think the roofers who were out replacing the roof on Saturday dropped something through the roof while working and it knocked one of the sheets of drywall out of place in the ceiling. Yikes! The realtor is contacting the roofers we'll see what they say tomorrow. It's bad enough I'm guessing to make it look "normal" we will have to redo the drywall on most of the ceiling in that room.
