Tumor on hens waddle?

I'm so sorry to hear your old girl has a tumor...I'm afraid I can relate to your predicament. We had a wonderful buff Orp who of course was my favorite 'cause she followed me around. She was just over a year old when I discovered a tumor, but it was at the top of her leg, near the joint. It didn't bother her at first, but after while she began to pick at it--I tried to keep it clean but it must have irritated her quite a bit because she continued to peck at herself until it was quite nasty. The other girls didn't bother her, she continued to eat and act herself, until one Sunday morning when I went out before church, she was laying on the floor of the coop, I held her as she died. I know I should have put her out of her misery--I just kept hoping she'd improve. Selfish, I know, but true. I sometimes forget that God made creatures so they don't focus on their pain, discomfort...they aren't going to gripe like we do...
Best of luck with your girl.

Could it be Marek's? Was she born blind? That could be a symptom..

Unfortunately, I think the kindest thing to do would be to cull because the tumor is just going to get bigger or it will spread throughout her body. If it's Marek's it's contagious. If you have the money I'd consider taking her to the vet . I'm no expert on Marek's but hopefully someone who is will see this thread and offer advice.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this.

I'm so sorry about your girl.... i feel the same way about Hazel.... I just keep thinking she'll get better. I have no idea how old she is, so that doesn't help and I don't know if she was born blind. We rescued her from a abusive home. Her owner left her in a 4x4 cage with 15 other chickens in it. (My other 2 chickens came from there too.) Thanks for your concern.

Pick: It could be mareks.... but i don't think it is. I'll research it more. As I said above, I don't know if she was born blind. She could of been, or the other hens could of pecked her eyes and made her blind. I wish I knew. We have money, but not a lot... otherwise we would bring her right to the vet. But a vet visit would cost just as much as bringing a dog in.... 40 bucks. Thanks for your concern.

I do understand about the vet costs, they can get expensive really fast!

I'm sorry you are having to go through this - she looks like a very sweet girl. Please keep us updated - we are all hoping for the best!

Thank you all for being so concerned.... I have to go let the chickens out now. I''ll try to feed her some scrambled eggs.
When I go to church I will keep her in the coop with fresh water and food... hopefully she will perk up. Once I get home i'll let her out to get some fresh air for a little bit. (Fresh air = 40 degrees air = BRR)

Very sorry to say, but Hazel passed away last night. I don't know when but I found her in the coop lying face down on the ground... the other 2 chickens snuggling her. I hope she died peacefully.
Thank you all for your help... my family and I are very heartbroken now, but she is in a happier place.
Yours truly,
AnimalsComeFirst

EDIT: Incase anyone wanted to know, I disected her throat and found what blocked her airway: shavings, food and pebbles. There was also I believe a infection on her throat, it was a big black lump under all the blockage.
