Turkey breeding tips

I have a male and female turkey, I've seen the Tom mating once with the hen. I suspect they have other times, due to a muddy chest on the hen. The eggs do far don't seem fertilized, and the hen generally to to avoid the Tom. The Tom will start acting like he's mating, without being on the hen. Is he just dumb?
Will the hen lay several eggs before going broody?
