I hatched out my purebred narragansett poults this year. And out popped this little yellow turkey poult. What happened? My adult turkeys are purebreds from Meyer Hatchery and last year I did not get any yellow poults from them. Any ideas how I got a yellow poult(all the other ones are the color they are supposed to be)?

Almost all hatcheries buy their eggs from breeding farms. Though your adults look pure they may not be and occasionally something strange will pop up. I have even had it happen in birds I have had a couple of generations. With birds it is so easy for a hen or roo to be in the wrong place at the right time and opps a mixed chick or poult that looks just like mom. :)

White is recessive in Turkeys, I have never heard of Narris having a white gene pop up and it would have to come from both parents, so I suggest waiting to see what it colors out to look like. It maybe a nice surprise (like my first Golden Narragansett was). Are the eyes Blue or Brown?

Send pics when it starts to feather out!

I'm certainly not a turkey guru, my first try at turkeys are coming in June, but one of the breeders I get chicks from also breeds Narragansetts. I pondered on hatching eggs from him one day and he warned me that recessive white is running around his birds and I might hatch out a White Narragansett. He got purebred stock from a private breeder, maybe she got her turkeys from meyer? Again, no idea, turkey genetics still baffle me. Just thought I'd throw in what I know! He says the white birds are the same size/build as the narries and act the same, but they are pure white!

(sorry, edit to fix date! August? Why did I say August? Must've been half asleep!)

Interesting. I have had pure white Royal Palms pop up (so did the lady that I got my original birds from though the ones I have now are not from her). I have never heard of white Narris. :) Since birds are not pedigreed like other species, I think that many times it is a case of "it looks like a _________ so it must be a __________" I have often acquired birds from sources that say they are pure this or that and then odd balls start showing up in the hatches. And as a person that has 5 different varieties that produce black chicks, it gets very confusing trying to keep straight what is what in the brooder! Right now I am waiting on some Royal Palm poults to start coloring out so I can tell them from the Holland Whites that hatched the same night.

From what I've heard, Turkeys don't have such clean cut lines separating varieties like chickens do, so I guess anything's possible! I think the funky genetics are why a lot of the new varieties don't breed true. Oh well, diving in head first! Hoping I'll get a shot at breeding next year...

Heritgae Bronze, Royal Palm, Bourbon Red, Narragansett, Holland White, & Pencilled Palms. Since Poters doesn't ship to VA it took me 5 years to get my flock of Pencilled Palms, but they are worth the wait!

Oh my gosh, those palms are absolutely elegant! I drooled over them on Porter's site, along with the Tiger Bronze. I believe they're one of my backup varieties for the order!! If I ever find myself aching for more Turkeys, I'll remember you! (Sorry to the OP for thread-naping)
