Turkey coop/run/pen requirements? Help!

Yes. You do need a permit. We possess required authorization. Not that I am looking to house a wild turkey. Or any more for that matter. Hell, im trying to reduce my numbers. But you’re correct, you do need permits for such. And it is frowned upon if you’re in possession of animal prior to applying from what I gather. But I’m just spewing crap I’ve heard around. Not positive in that.

I thought that the 24 hour grace period was a nice thing and it also allows for the ability to request an extension.

I read it in the Wisconsin DNR regulations.

Under section 169.04.

"(2) Temporary possession.

(a) A person possessing a live native wild animal for a period not to exceed 24 hours is exempt from having a license or other approval as required under sub. (1)(b) if the person is possessing the wild animal for any of the following purposes:

1. To restrain or transport the wild animal for medical treatment by a veterinarian or by a person holding a rehabilitation license.

2. To remove or transport the wild animal from one location to a more appropriate location.

3. To restrain or transport the wild animal for game censuses or surveys, or other purposes authorized by the department."

Thanks, everyone! When we thought it was a pheasant, we knew that we were likely breaking the law in keeping him, but we couldn’t in good conscience just leave him outside to be eaten. He showed up the evening of July 3, and even if we had been able to find a rehab center or DNR resources, it was a long holiday weekend, and we were admittedly caught off guard.

I’ll look into options for him, but I absolutely will not deliver him to a turkey farm to be raised for slaughter, even if that means breaking the law. In the meantime, I’m just trying to figure out how to provide the best quality of life for him.

They thought it was a pheasant... Would they really be able to tell if it was a wild turkey or not? None of us has any idea. At this point, it sounds like a pet turkey to me. Not acting very "wild". And it has been raised without siblings, most likely offering it little chance in the wild. After all there is only one species of meleagris gallopavo. I doubt that it would be possible to tell if this were a wild turkey or a domestic escapee from some turkey farm at this point, since it is only 3 weeks old. And I doubt that they really know, having never raised any birds. I was completely unable to tell it was wild from that slipper picture!

3 weeks is soon? I'm sure in another 3 weeks they will discover that they have a "pet turkey". Perhaps from what they learn here, it won't take that long...
