Turkey recovery from blackhead!

The force-feeding was the best single piece of advice I found ANYwhere, by the way! For some reason, it had never occured to me to do that, nor had anyone I'd known ever done that, but it surely saved her life. If you notice that ANY of your animals is not eating, MAKE THEM. Whatever ailment/illness they have that is ruining their appetite, they will NOT be able to fight it without sustenance.

Thanks so much Chris!

Great story chris50270. I'm glad that your turkey is doing good.

In cases like this, we as responsible owners have to "force feed" our animals to keep them alive. It's the only way. I have been doing it for years if I see any of my animals looking "not so well". Force feeding my Tom a couple of years ago saved his life. Thank goodness I did it.

This is a great thread for others that post and need help.

Again, great story. Thanks for sharing.

I know this is a old thread and glad I could found this one on google , I have a female turkey with the same symptoms and she is on flagyl(metronidazole) she is a lot better but not 100% but I never know about the force feeding (thanks for this threat) I will cook boiled egg and mixed it with canyene pepper and force feed her from tomorrow. I will update on her progress

Sorry to hear about your hen but glad that she is a lot better. The term sounds so rough but it's really quick easy and the bird does not suffer. Casportpony is a pro at tube feeding. I know that she will see this thread and chime in. Since this thread, I have secured a HUGE syringe (without the needle of course) and have mixed a food mixture up and have fed it to one of my poults that needed it. It is a 2 ounce syringe. Worked a miracle for my bird.

Keep us posted on your bird. Good Luck.

so this begs the question - How do you force feed? Do you just pry open their beaks and put the blended food (i'm imagining something like the texture of babyfood) in a giant syringe and squirt it down their throat?

Everyone will do it a different way. I think casportpony uses a tube. I'm sure she will chime in shortly. But the way that you explained it is EXACTLY what I do for my birds when I have to feed them. It's a slow process. I squirt a little bit in their mouth near their throat and allow them to swallow it. Once it is swallowed, I keep doing it over and over until all the food is gone. I have saved several birds that way because they were not eating.

Pic of one of the sryinges that I use. I have one HUGE syringe that holds 2 ounces of baby food.

Here is a pic of tons of baby food that I scored from Craigslist. I always make sure that I have baby food on hand for the animals because I never know when I will need it.

Learn to tube feed, it's easy, safe and fast. If you need help. I'm available by phone to talk you through it. The tube and syringe you can get from any vet, just ask them for a 35cc catheter tip syringe and a 18 french catheter/feeding tube.

This link has lots of good info:

This is what I use:

Here are some pictures of how to do it:
