Turkey Talk for 2014

I'm so glad we don't have the snow the rest of y'all have... it's been in the 70's here

This is brilliant!!!

Thank you! Only one of the eight hatched. I lost the others b/c they got too hot (faulty thermometer). I swapped thermometers for lockdown so I could monitor the humidity. Big mistake!!! It was accurate at room temp, but at 102, it read 90-ish!!! All the chicks were malpositioned so as to indicate overheating during lockdown.
I did get one. Here she is:

I'll get a pic tomorrow. She's cuter now that she's all fluffed out!!! =D
I now have two pet chickens.
Congrats on your new fluffy butt! She is adorable

I got a new Tom yesterday. He will be 2 this spring. He is locked in a "cage" at the moment. I have a hen that lays in the coop watching him. She seems to be dying to meet him up close and personal. Lol How long do I need to keep him caged in the coop before he can free range with the others?

thanks- they are both about 10-11 months old.....looking at the photos I can find, they look like they could be Rio or heritage bronze but could be crosses of whatever....I am swapping one of the hens out for one of the toms as my coworker says he has way too many toms now LOL...

I also have what I was told is a Pencil Palm Tom- about 8 months old but again, I feel it is a hen except for the tail- has that uneven fan that young toms have and his head is bare down his neck......I will try to get a photo (he trys to get in my lap when I am in the pen or is moving so fast I cant seem to get a good shot)

I quarantine for at least two weeks, and some do for three weeks.

I'm not so concerned with quarantining him. I know the people I got him from, and their birds are very healthy. I just don't know how long to keep him penned so he doesn't run off.
Is he your only tom? How many hens do you have? If he is the only tom he should stay with the hens. Especially since one is already eyeing him...

If your hens stick around he will too. Toms tend to be lazy & want to stay where the food is. I've never had a tom take off on me (mine stay penned) but my hens will escape every chance they get. My pen doors have been left open a few times by the kids. The hens will be out running all over & there's my tom standing in the pen calling to the girls telling them to come back.

He is the only Tom, and I also have only the 1 hen. They are pets, but once see started laying, I couldn't help myself from buying a Tom so maybe they could make some babies. Lol

Yes, I've had her since last summer, and she walks in the woods some and has made a nest there, but never wonders out of sight. She tried to sit in my lap!!! But she's entirely too heavy. Lol

Just give him a few days to learn where the food comes from & he should be fine. He'll stick close to the food & the hen.
