Turkey Talk for 2014

The turkeys are fertile! Everything laid since the 22nd is developing. I have slates & slate/palm crosses right now. I lost my palm tom last night to a sparring injury from the slate tom that I didn't catch in time.

I had let my ex come back briefly to give him 1 last chance. He was supposed to be taking care of the birds. I noticed my palm tom acting lethargic & asked JJ to check him over. He lied & said he did then told me Henry was fine. My daughter came in screaming yesterday morning that we had a dead turkey. He wasn't yet & I tried to save him but he didn't make it through the night.

On top of that, he totaled my car yesterday & then copped an attitude with me & my daughter both this morning. He found himself with a 40+ mile walk to his nearest relative this morning.

Oh, honey!!!

IDK what to say.

We're better off without him. So much quieter the past 2 days...lol

Well, I'm happy for you that you're better off and I'm proud of you for doing what you believe is best for you (your daughter, I assume) and your birds!
At the same time, I'm sure it's a hard thing to do, so  :hugs

My daughter threw a fit when she saw him packing & then this morning thanked me for throwing him out. She's a bit moody at 10. :hmm
My son who is 7 hasn't said a word about him even being gone. Last time I threw JJ out, my son partied for the whole 3 days because he could play xbox without getting yelled at...lol He likes it better this way too. ;)

I'm glad things are working out all the way around. =)
Yeah, my girls started getting moody about that age. It doesn't get better for a while. ;)

hi guys i was wondering if you guys know of a good nest thing for bourbon reds?
I had to build two today out of wood basically a box without a lid or a front, just back and sides, filled with coarse ponderosa pine chips from a big tree we had fell this year. I noticed my tom bred both of my hens yesterday and one was trying to make a nest out of stuff on the ground. I hope they like the new boxes.

I can add my BBB experience to the conversation, but this is only my 3rd year with turkeys, 2nd with BBB's. I got 15 poults from Ideal last year. I lost one hen to coyotes and traded one tom to a friend. All the others have done very well. None have had leg problems so far. The hens run around, clumsily, but they do run. The tom just struts and has no personality at all. I put 7 toms in the freezer. My hens started laying at about 7-8 months. I started getting fertile eggs 2-3 months later. I tried hatching 2 different times, but although the eggs are fertile, they don't seem to be viable. There was no development in any of the 35 turkey eggs. But I did hatch 2 chicks that I had added with the first clutch, so I'm pretty sure it's not the incubator

. The second clutch I candled and tossed. I'm going to try a heritage tom over my BBB hens, but I've also decided, after reading what others on here do, that I'm going to switch to heritage birds and clip wings if need be. As long as they stay away from the house and cars, the neighbors shouldn't complain.
