Turkey Talk for 2014

that sounds like good info Ari we only have a little over an acre more than some less than others we plan to buy more fencing each year & continue to remove trees this year we are planting a garden just for the chickens pumpkins & squash mostly we will store as many as we can in the attic & cook them up every couple days on the woodstove so they have a nice warm breakfast it makes their feed last longer & gives them a treat to peck at.

My new hen laid an egg yesterday! I just got her Sunday, so I wasn't expecting one. I knew as soon as I saw it that it wasn't from one of my BBB hens. I hope she continues to lay an egg I can recognize. Of course, I went right home and cracked it open. Not fertile. I hope by the time my incubator is empty, Mr. Tom will have things figured out.

I candled one of the BBB eggs yesterday and it's clear. I'm sure the others will be too, but it's no surprise. But the chicken eggs I candled (just one of each because it's actually a bit early) are developing. My one Speckled Sussex is clear though. Sigh. I was sent the wrong eggs and only got one SS egg. The rest are Silkies -not what I ordered- and Lav Orps, which are a friends. So nothing in this hatch for me.

Ok, so my dh goes out to see the turkeys today, and he finds the hen in the coop laying on her back. He picked her up, she was slightly bleeding on her snood, and has a spot of blood on her wing joint. Any clue as to how she may have gotten stuck on her back? Shes been laying in the corner of her coop since. Not getting up, she did eat what I took to her, but other than that shes not doing much of anything.

Thanks for any ideas!

Deb

Wow, thats very odd! How many are in the pen? Sounds like there was a disagreement, but her "moping" and being on her back isn't good at all.
Do you have a crate to confine her, and possibly check her over closer? Sounds like she may have something else going on, possibly injury you can't see.

We just have the 2, 1 hen 1 turkey both about a year old. No crate to confine her, but we will put a divider up in their coop. We just came in from looking her over and didn't find anything more than I listed above, accept for a couple spots on her face that looks like small bites. She went to the bathroom while we were out there, looked like mostly white liquid. Shes a bit warmer under her right wing where the blood spot was than her left wing. But other than that she looks fine.

Ive just never heard of a turkey being on her back and stuck like that. He said she was breathing hard while on her back, but as soon as he righted her, she perked right back to normal. So I've checked on her a couple times today and she was laying in the corner of her coop that she never goes to. I'm hoping he didn't step on her while she was down on her back.

I want to thank all of you for your suggestions and support on hatching turkey eggs. I just had my first 100 % hatch. My first hatch was 50%, then dropped incubator temp by 0.5 degree and dropped humidity from high 40s to 20, hatcher temp dropped to 98.5 and humidity up to 65%. Second hatch was 5 out if six, now 4 out of 4. So this set had the changes made half way through incubation, still hatched early on day 26 but air cells were a lot bigger and didn't have any trouble hatching. :D thanks:D.

I picked up my first poults a week ago. Their aprx DOB is the 17Th. I picked two with thick legs assuming they were male. I am wondering now if I have a male and female? They have been weighed three times now.
2.0 oz 2.3 oz
2.6 oz 3.0 oz
3.8 oz 4.3 oz

If you notice, one goes up a certain amount, and the other mimics it each time minus point one oz. What do the experts of the group think?

Ok... I am finally getting ready, found a sweet lady that is going to sell me fertile Bourbon Red eggs. I am purchasing 2 dozen.. She has four hens and one tom, they are gorgeous!! she doesn't want them to hatch anymore and doesn't want the eggs so she has just today started saving them, I'll pick them up next week, she said all four hens lay an egg each every other day, they have already laid two dozen but she refrigerated them so they are out.. hopefully I'll get my two dozen before they quit... She is almost giving them away, $10 a dozen!!

My question is.. I have a hova bator 1602N still air with auto turner.. Are turkeys the same as chicken eggs just go a week longer? I've been trying to read up and prepare but its confusing.. The best hatch of chicken eggs so far I have had was when I followed the incubator instructions, 40-50 humidity days 1-18 and 55-60 humidity during lockdown.. temp 101-102 throughout.

I'm gonna do it finally...
