Turkey Talk for 2014

Thanks everyone for the responses. I was on a family day yesterday with my kids after spending a day writing a 10 page paper for school.
I did call the Lab and spoke with the doctor who performed the necropsy. She said she may get the gut back today and she could not accurately confirm but believes there may be a coccidiosis infection as the intestinal wall was inflamed, though initial fecal tests did not show coccidia that she believes she observed round things that appear to be coccidia. She said she was just as concerned with this as she was the possibility of an upper respiratory infection. Overall, the necropsy was not "remarkable" and only test results now can be of help.Tests will start coming in next week and then we can start to piece together the bigger picture.

Also, I have no intention of culling without good reason. I just wanted to clear this up as I had mentioned before I was concerned I might have to. All my birds here seem in fantastic health and we don't have symptoms from anyone else so I would be rather foolish to disperse either my turkey flock or all of my birds at this point.

I had a question. 3 weeks ago when we were at the same feed store my son excitedly told the owner he saw eggs in the nest box of one of the pens. The owner let him go in and get the egg and bring it home. This was a different pen and in an area separate from where the poults were. My concern is that the egg hatched yesterday and I wonder if perhaps I should be concerned that something was transmitted through the egg? Is this just being overly cautious? I know I have to wait for test results and most likely if the poults had anything we would be contaminated already. It was just a thought. The chick looks to be a little silkie mix, small but strong and healthy.

She just died. Flopped out of the box and laid on her back and bent her neck ask the way back and died. As soon ad my husband gets home I will cut her open and see what I can see.

Thank you all for so much great advice. Now that I only have 4 left, besides the fact that I will close of the compost poor immediately, should I find the fish stuff and feed it to the rest just to be safe? I will know more in about 3 hours.

Quick question for anyone...if I use a broody to brood turkey when do I need to supply food and water? Day one? I know the yolk keeps them fed for a couple of days, but this chick is no longer with the mama, she's inside. And I normally have my chicks shipped to me. So I'm really just not sure. Do I also put poly vit in the water?

Thanks

Deb

Poults can take a while to figure out how to eat and drink so I would make it available now. This way, she can practice and get the hang of it for a few days before it becomes a necessity. Try shiny marbles in the water; this is often the number one recommendation that I see from turkey owners. I'm new at this but I used them when I got my first poults and had zero problems. I didn't lose any. The poly vit is up to you and perhaps something someone else can remark upon. I would think it wouldn't hurt. Good luck

So sorry for your loss... I'd like to suggest that you get a kitchen or postal scale and weigh all of your poults, including the deceased. A healthy chick or poult should make daily weight gains of about 7-12% per day. Any less than that and the chick or poult is probably sick.

While blackhead could be the cause of death, it could also be coccidiosis or some type of bacterial infection, possibly all three. Do you have Corid? Sure wouldn't hurt to treat with Corid. Also might be a good idea to de-worm them.

The API General Cure is a powder, so you would have to tube it. If the others look nice and healthy and are an appropriate weight for their age, I'd buy the Fishzole and use it if they start looking iffy.

RIP sweet Juniper
We had our 1st predatory attack last night after doing poultry for 5 years. It was a great horned owl I believe after feather identification. It attacked from above through netting to where the turkey was roosting. It must have pushed the netting down pretty far. It also looks like it tried to get a speckled sussex as its feathers are all over, but she is alive. Any ideas on how to deter owls?
Oh WeatheredWings, I'm so sorry. Poor baby Juniper.

I've not had a problem with owls because I have an issue with raccoons, so all my pens have 2" X 4" welded wire over the top (I can't even use chicken wire -- the raccoons can patiently uncoil it). But it can be a lot of work and expense to replace netting with welded wire. The motion activated spotlights sound like a great idea.
