Note: This is not my bird, it's one I sold two months ago and it was one that was raised indoors and off the ground, it was healthy and parasite/protozoa free when it left here.

Got a call yesterday from someone that I sold two young peacocks to two months ago saying that both were looking sick a few days ago. I told him I would come get the dead one and the one still alive and try to save it, but it died four hours after I brought it home.

Symptoms:
  • Depressed
  • Dropped wings
  • Not eating
  • Weak
  • Thin
  • Yellow liquid poop
  • Dark green cecal poop with blood

Here he is looking very stoic three hours before he died. You can't tell from the picture, but he's about 1kg (2.2 pounds) underweight.

Here is a poop picture, but it looked much more yellow than it does here.

Here are the necropsy pictures from one of the peacocks.

Liver and cecal pouches

Contents of cecal pouch - black liquid poop, NOT normal!

Inside of cecal pouch

Liver with the blackhead spots and I think the black edges are necrotic

Speaking of illnesses and eating the bird after processing....
I had a BBB and BBW hen processed yesterday. They developed swollen sinuses over a month ago - more like 2 months ago. I had them on Oxytricycline for two weeks and then Sulmet for 5 days in case it was CRD. It never went away. They would sneeze, but there was never any discharge from their sinuses or eyes after the first week. It was clear discharge the first 5-8 days of the initial swelling. No one else (had 5 others in with them) got the illness. Last year when I had my BBBs and BBWs processed, their livers were bright red/brown - like cow's liver. These girls' livers were pale. The gizzards and hearts were fine.

Even store bought livers aren't that pale. And they were off antibiotics well over a month.
I did have them on cement - no forage - and just crumbles. Not sure if their diet has anything to do with it.

Funny you should post this... I was just looking up symptoms for pseudomonas and read something about pale livers.

@Reyvaughn ,

"Post-mortem findings
Gross pathological lesions in chickens result in death due
to

Pseudomonas infection, were abdominal distention and
the cloacal region was tensed and bulged. There were
excess accumulations of green gelatinous fluid covered
with thin membrane in the abdominal cavity. In most cases,
the liver has pale color and more expressively it has a
para-boiled appearance."

Interesting.
My girls were 2 months old when they got this, and these signs were not part of their illness:

"Depression, loss of appetite, rough
coat, stands with closed eyes and death after few hours in a
day were also observed in most infected chickens by the
disease"

Also, the one female's intestines and stomach were opened and what I smelled was not sweet and fruit. Rank turkey poo, yes, lol!

I am already sure I won't be eating their livers, heart or gizzards, just because of the liver's color. I was more concerned about the turkeys themselves. I read another post her eon BYC that the response was just an infection that Tylan would take care of - which I did not have on hand because every time I go to replace mine, the bottles are outdated or nearly outdated on TSC's shelves.

I got tired of TSC being out of everything also! Now I buy most of my meds online from Jefferpet.com and you can buy just about anything for any animal and have it delivered to you in a few days. They are great and have a specialist there to answer questions also if you need help. They are very nice. :)

Has anyone noticed a personality difference in the heritage verses the BB breeds? My BBW is calm and almost affectionate while my 2 heritage mutts are squirrely. It is a shame the tamest turkey is the one named Thanksgiving. I was told the heritage pair would make better pets but they act like I'm about to kill them if I approach them. Any tips on taming them?

My BBB hens were so personable. The toms really had no personality at all. I put all the toms in the freezer, but couldn't kill the hens. One died of injuries, one from a coyote and I gave the other 3 away. They're still living the good life. The person who has them says she understands why I couldn't butcher them. She says they're spoiled rotten. They follow her to her shop every morning and wait until she opens the door and turns on the fan. Then they line up in front of it and sit there through the heat of the day. Who says turkeys are stupid?

My young Bourbon reds are more stand offish, except for a couple jakes and one jenny. They're pests. But they aren't terrified of me like my first turkeys, which were Eastern Wild.
