Turkey Talk for 2014

Sounds delicious.

MMMM It is. I ate it for breakfast, lunch and dinner for 2 days lol. And it is so simple.

Put the whole chicken in the slow cooker and pour an entire bottle of Italian dressing in with it and let it cook for the day. Then take the whole chicken out and debone and put the chicken back in the crockpot with the Italian dressing juices. I cook Jasmine rice on the side and then in a bowl of rice pour chicken and juice on top, then salt and pepper.

Any water or broth to provide extra liquid, or just the bottle of Italian dressing?  What brand dressing, and how big a bottle?  So simple -- I need to use my crock pot more!!

I marinate pork & chicken in italian dressing all the time. We love it. We like Zesty Italian best but any kind works. Just pour it over & let it sit in the fridge a couple hours before going in the oven or skillet. I'll have to try it in the crockpot next time. Sounds good!

Quote: That's ok, it looks like nanclapper had the information. There are a few images of Urch's pricelist on BYC. This is the most current list, but it is difficult to read: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/842143/duane-urch-lis I'm sure if you pm'd the person who posted it she would be glad to let you know any specific prices. I've heard that it can take a while to get a price list, and that he sells out fast. There may be better images on another thread, but this was the one I found quickly. I know there are some readable images of last year's price list if you hunt around BYC. I saw one the other day, but can't remember exactly which thread.
Thanks Chickadoodles for posting about Frank Reese's stock since I have been waiting to order White Holland hatching eggs from him. I talked with him last Sept and indeed he does not ship poults, however, he will ship hatching eggs. Something to keep in mind if you want his stock. Frank said to contact him in March for hatching eggs....so I'm patiently waiting.

. So I called The Hatchery and asked him if he still had Frank Reese's stock and he said he does. So I will be ordering from him he has some ready now! And he said his min. order is 10 poults. Here is the link to his website: http://www.countryhatchery.net/order_information.html
WHICH of the turkey varietes are from Reese?? All?

Quote: About a year ago, Bob Blosl brought him to our attention on the Heritage Breed THread. Mr Reese had been waiting to make his stock publicly available. Bob kindly gave us a list at that time. He is a noted breeder of stock, particularly for meat production. Would be great to get feed back if anyone buys his stock. THe biggest problem that I hear about with the heritage birds is that they need improvement in general though a few others have been selecting for meat quality for some time.

go to this link and then double click on the image. It will come up as a bigger image and the text is clear. Note that the second pic is the bottom section of the first page. Ditto for the fourth pic matching the 3rd pic.

nothing else added. Just the bottle of dressing. I use my grocery store brand light Italian Dressing it is a 16 fl oz bottle. Between the dressing and the juices from the chicken there is plenty of liquid.

Took the plunge, in my area there is a site called Oregon homesteaders, posted an ad putting the word out I was looking to purchase fertile Narragansett eggs when available.. Got three hits within just a few hours, all three will let me know when I can purchase. !! Got a few folks offering me adult birds that will start laying this spring. .tempting but so not ready for adult turkeys yet... One step closer :)

ANyone have Reese's price list and offereings for 2014-- ????

I don't see that info on the buy turkey meat website-- could be that I am just blind. lol

I looked all over the meat sale page also. Good stuff, but nothing still alive that I could find. I couldn't find any place on his web site that mentioned sale of eggs or poults. Nanclapper posted on the previous page his egg prices and contact information (quoted above). Chickadoodles had previously posted that Frank Reese does not ship poults , but that his stock was available from Country Hatchery (I assume that means that Mr. Reese sold birds to Country Hatchery years ago and that they have continued that line, as opposed to the hatchery obtains poults directly from Mr. Reese's current breeding program to fill hatchery orders, which could result in very different birds since a different person is making the selection of breeder birds). The post is cut and pasted below.

According to the hatchery's website, there is a small order option for turkeys, but it is difficult to find. Three heritage poults for $55, customer's choice of any variety they carry, and it appears to include shipping. Go to the home page, click on catalog, then on sale, then scroll downwards until you find the turkey small order option.
