Turkey Talk for 2014

That was the first egg of the year that wasn't smashed to pieces under the roost. No tom, so no fertile eggs, but they are tasty!

Sigh.....already have a broody turkey hen. At least this one will let me pull eggs out from underneath her without removing strips of skin. I was planning on building a nest house that I could block off from the others once things dry out, but oh no, she couldn't wait. Not sure what I'm going to do now. I'm pretty sure you can't move a broody turkey like you can a chicken.

You can try moving her, but if she has access back to her original spot she will likely return.

I have two that so far have tried to go broody, the first one, I kept taking her eggs and disturbing her, she quit laying for almost a week and went back to laying, the second one is determined to sit every chicken egg laid, she lays her eggs in the coop in the nesting boxes. I keep kicking her off the nest. I am hoping to keep them laying for a bit longer then I'll let them sit. I was hoping they would just continue to lay, at least til June as I was going to take a dozen eggs to Oklahoma for my sis to hatch but I told her this morning to not hold her breath, I'll keep collecting eggs for now but will more then likely allow them to brood in a few weeks.

Update this weeks hatch is nearly complete... 7 turkey eggs went in and 6 chicken eggs. Set them upright in egg cartons for hatching.. Day 26 for turkeys and one piped, got to looking with the flashlight and noticed a chicken egg piped the wrong end, hurried up and took it out and laid it down.. Went back a few hours later and with a flashlight again noticed another egg (turkey this time) piped the wrong.. sadly it was apparent as soon as I took it out that it had died, thinking perhaps it piped but the carton caused it to suffocate??
Today is day 28, got 2 turkeys and 5 chickens out and in the brooder, one more chicken and turkey piped last night and three turkeys show no signs.

Got one more set going into lockdown Wednesday, obvious hatch wasn't better in the egg carton, so I'll probably just lay them down, Saving to set again and this time I wont use the turner, its obvious the chicks do fine but the turkeys don't, Going to see if that might be my problem. So back to hand turning for me

hope this hatch finishes well. As well as the next.

I have never hand turned eggs always used turners in my incubators.

Do you see better hatch rates with hand turned eggs?
