Turkey Talk for 2014

I keep mine penned for the most part. I don't let them out at all in the winter months and I try to let them free range occasionally in the spring fall and summer. I have a small lot and have neighbors and a very busy road so It makes it tough.

Here is my turkey pen( there is aviary netting draped over the pvc, I need to fix a piece of pvc)

this is the grow out pen I added to the side of the main pen

Is it ok if I save your pics to my computer?? Anytime I am trying to explain something to my husband who can put anything together and fix anything, I try to show him in pictures cause we have this guy girl thing going on...you know, what I say gets to his ear and then is scrambled into gibberish when his brain is processing it... Anyways, your set up is great!!

Thanks!!! We have a metal shed on the back of our property that we were going to use for the Turkeys but I was having a hard time explaining how I wanted the run set up because the run has to be covered...I seriously think he likes to make me think I confuse him

After looking at that set-up I'm thinking pvc would be the way to go for my netting supports too.

PVC works fantasticly!!! Im so glad it is the route I went. It didn't take long at all to put up. I stays arched like a rainbow and allows the birds to stay in and I can still walk with plenty of head room I think It is roughly 8ft tall. I have only had that one piece of pvc break and that was last winter during some really bad weather involving tons of ice and loads of wet snow. We bought the replacement piece just didn't get around to fixing it lol Its on our Spring chore to do list.

When my MIL had to be placed into a long term care facility it was left up to my husband and myself to sell her vehicles and home...37+ years of accumulation (they never threw out anything) made for a very difficult job...... In cleaning up the shop and property Jeff found so many useful things and lots of 10+ foot long PVC...he , like his dad, never throws anything away until he is sure he will not be able to use it. The PVC I can now claim!!!

I have a question for you turkey experts on behavior. I am very new to turkeys so I am still trying to figure them out. I got 3 girls initially and the smallest one has always been bossy. I then got a tom for them that was slightly younger. He is starting to get his big boy pants and I seen him displaying for the first time this morning. The little girl seen this and ran to him and started whooping on him. He is backing down from her at this point. He is probably around 6 to 7 months old and the girls are about 8 to 9 months old. Should I worry about her doing this to him or will he figure it out and let her know he is the boss soon? She bosses everyone around. It surprises me because she is the smallest out of the group.

I definitely wouldn't go messing with the alternative. I have never looked into it but to me capturing and keeping wild turkeys doesn't sound legal to me. Also wild and domestic turkeys are very different they have different diets and needs Im not sure plopping it in a pen and giving it feed store pellets would be best for it. I personally would not go that route. I would wait patiently for hatching eggs or even poults or adult turkeys. There are loads of us on BYC that sell, there is also craigslist, feed stores and hatcheries.
Sooooo agree. We have 2 hens that are 1/2 wild and half domesticated bronze..let me tell you, those two have never calmed down at all. They are flighty and not people friendly. We are mating them with a bronze tom this year, hope a 3/4 bronze dilutes that wild streak enough to make the babies nicer, then these girls are going to freezercamp.
