Turkey Talk for 2014

Blu-kote will help. Not sure if turkeys can have augmentin. I know they can have duramycin-10 & tylan. Blu-kote will help, but you may end up having to lance the wound if it's too bad.

I agree. If she has an infection she needs antibiotics. If she is a pet you don't need to worry about withdrawal time for meat, but you do for eggs. I had a hen get a spur puncture during breeding once and she would have died without medical care. Do everything possible to keep her eating, even if you have to hand feed her treats. Once they stop eating it can be hard to get them to start again, and the illness gets worse much faster.

The puffy area may be filled with pus, like the cat abscess, or it may be filled with serum. Serum pockets can occur from trauma. If there's a penetrating wound right over the pocket, then pus is more likely. If there's no skin-penetrating wound over the pocket, then serum is more likely. If it's just serum then it may not have to be lanced. If it's pus then it does need to be lanced. If you're going to do this yourself instead of take her to the vet, you can try to get a sample with a needle and syringe. Stick the needle in the pocket of liquid and pull back on the plunger to fill the syringe. If it's clear to straw colored liquid that you can see through and doesn't smell, then it's serum. If it's white or bloody or yellow liquid that is thick and you can't see through it, and it stinks, then it's pus. If you don't get anything back, then it might just be tissue swelling, or it could be solidified pus, so harder to decide in that case.

What kind of antibiotics. I have Augmentan (sp) they gave me for a gash from a roo will that work? Also should I bring the other hen out with her?

If she and the other hen get along, she will probably be happier with the company, as long as they stay calm together. PM me regarding the Augmentin.

Thanks for the advice on the eggs. I didn't find much online, so i thought i would ask the experts. I will poll customers at the market in the coming weekends and see if I can find an expert.

Does anyone have recommendations on an incubator ? My son wants to hatch some poults, so I don't want to spend too much - as it maybe a passing fad ! I was thinking the styrofoam type that hold about 30 (or so) eggs ?

I use and LOVE the Hova bator 1588. I actually have 2 of them one for an incubator and one for a hatcher.

I have a Little Giant, a Farm Innovator & a Hovabator. All are very similar & work very similar. I don't have any real complaints about any of them. I will give a word of advice: Regardless of brand, do not use the water troughs in the bottom. It is to hard to get water back out & humidity back down if you get too much water in them. Use cups, bowls or small jars for water. You can bend a piece of hardware cloth over the top of the water containers at lockdown to keep babies out. If humidity is too low, add another water container. Too high, take 1 out. No hassles.

I adore my Brinsea incubators. I have these two:

http://brinsea.com/products/oct40Eco.html

And if you call the customer service line at Brinsea to ask if they have any specials, they frequently will have brand new but factory blemished incubators available at a great price. That's how I got the 40Eco. The yellow base part just has some little pitting in it from the casting process, it is cosmetic only and doesn't affect the functioning of the 'bator. And I got it for almost half price.

I also use the brinseas brooders, they have saved me hugely on my electric bill when raising chicks:

Happy hatching!

Homemade coolerbators are the best in my opinion.. easy to clean.. inexpensive to make plus you can keep spare parts on hand.. and you can fit a ton of eggs in there

You couldn't pay me enough to own another craptastic Brinsea... all of mine (and I had a bunch) are residing at the local landfill
