Turkey Talk for 2014

You are very welcome. You can google NPIP for your state and you can read about it and the requirements for your state. Every state is different.
Egg farmer's are great around here! I love eggs!

If I hatch some eggs I keep the babies separate till they are 3 months old for my NPIP agent to come test the birds for anything. If the person I got the eggs from is NPIP I still watch the chicks for anything out of the ordinary. My NPIP guy comes every 3 months anyways to test for the AI flu so if I have any birds in quarantine he tests them for me then also.
You just need to be very careful so you don't get your birds sick.

Mareks disease- Wikipedia.com: (Comes from Turkey)

For example, the related Herpesvirus of Turkeys (HVT), causes no apparent disease in turkeys and continues to be used as a vaccine strain for prevention of Marek's disease (see below). Birds infected with GaHV-2 can be carriers and shedders of the virus for life. Newborn chicks are protected by maternal antibodies for a few weeks. After infection, microscopic lesions are present after one to two weeks, and gross lesions are present after three to four weeks. The virus is spread in dander from featherfollicles and transmitted by inhalation.[2]

If the eggs aren't fertile, make omlets!
Are you serious? How long in the incubator can you still eat the eggs? I had some that went through the entire 21+ days and none hatched, the incubator had been too hot at the beginning, so they hadn't started developing; they didn't smell good.

.

I finally did see some tiny veins and the spot where the baby is.. looking at the chicken eggs first helped a lot I guess it warmed my eyes up.

I'll try looking at the rest of the turkeys tonight.

Don't candle too much in one night. I got a headache that way.

I think you misunderstood lol. Once you buy them and crack one or 2 open to check fertility(if that's what you decide to do) if those don't look fertile you can cook them up. After being in the incubator they are not edible.

thanks for the info Chickado

so a turkey can be more or less a carrier....... ?

i guess all the adult birds will get the vaccine including the turkeys

i only have about 30 adults total so i think i can handle it with not much trouble

now i'm wondering if i should also vaccinate for any other thing while i am at it

thanks
piglett
