Turkey Talk for 2014

The birds are convinced spring is here, even though the temperatures continue to fluctuate, from 70s one day to 30s the next.
Two of my hens in the vine thicket nest in my neighbors yard across the street. Every night, I gather the eggs and chase any lingering hens back home.

My favorite boy. A shame the hens don't like him, I'd love a ton of babies just like him. I'll keep him as a backup though.

The boy that gets all the ladies. He's pretty handsome too, but he doesn't have the rainbow of colors that the other has. The drumming these two make all day, every day, is loud enough to be heard inside the house. People who come over always ask, what is that strange 'poof' sound every so often? A lot of people don't seem to know that turkeys also make this sound, they don't just gobble and yelp. They have a whole language, as I've discovered!

I just put 13 eggs in my ancient, homemade wooden incubator, it was given to me 8 years ago (and it was old then! The person who gave it to me, a teacher, said he found it in storage and was pretty sure it was an incubator, but wasn't positive). It hatches eggs better than my little giant for sure. The outside window is cracked and duct taped and the blue paint on the outside is chipping, but it still faithfully keeps temperature. Humidity is 'controlled' by a little tupperware bowl underneath the wire that I fill up when it evaporates. I have 8 also under several broody silkies. The first 2 are due pretty soon.

I just love the colors of your turkey!

Good luck on your hatch

Thank you! I just love these crazy birds. They have much more personality than the chickens, I believe.
I agree. I was crazy about my turkey last year. I got a video of my old tom I gave to a family member as a pet and Ace came walking up in there living room struttin around like " hey where is everyone" And their huge dog took one look at ace and took off running away from him!

I agree about their personalities. If I had the housing and a safe fence, I think I'd sell just about all my chickens and switch to all turkeys and some hybrid 300 ducks (even though they are pigs with wings - but I love their eggs).

This is my first year breeding turkeys. My hens hens are around 9-10 mo old. The royal palm had been laying for 3 weeks but the blue slates haven't started yet, they are the same age. Is this typical for the breed??
The royal palm lays an egg a day for several days then skips a day. But hasn't given me an egg now for 3 days. 3 days ago I moved them into the new big flight pen with the peafowl. It is huge compared to what they were in. 5 turkeys and 5 peafowl sharing a 40'x50' flight pen with a large 16' wide loafing shed attached at one end. I put hay down in the loafing shed for nesting. It had also been VERY cold for the last 2 days. Do turkeys usually lay sporadically when they first start laying??

I just ordered another Bator to use for a Hatcher!!!! Now I can incubate more eggs!!! I have some turkey eggs that should be good, can I put them in with the chicken eggs to incubate, so long as I hatch them separate? Ive had them awhile, waiting to see if she gets broody, and just hate to waste them.
