Turkey Talk for 2014

Easter HAL gave me 2 BRs and 2 Midget Whites. One MW died, though. The remaining is a little girl. The BRs are a pair. I'm happy. I would have loved that other MW to live but I wasn't keeping them anyways.

I hatched my first quail, too. Shipping was really rough on them so I only got 11 of 63 eggs to hatch. One has a bad cross beak that I will need to cull. On top of that, I hatched 47 chicks. Now, Cinco De Mayo... I have 9 turkey eggs set for that. No idea how many chicken eggs. I lost track.

BR meaning Bourbon Reds or Barred Rocks? And how do you know the Midget White is a girl?

Barred Rocks are sexable. If Bourbon Reds how do you know they are a pair since they aren't sexable?

Im just curious, maybe you have a trick we don't know of to sex turkey as poults.

Bourbon Red.
The size of the snood... The girls' are tiny, almost non-existent. The boy's is much bigger.

I'm sure you can tell who is who. ;)

Another turkey newbie question....Are turkeys the same as chickens in respect that they do not see well at night?

Forgot to add that I discovered a broody turkey hen hisses! LOL She was hissing because the cat got too close to the nest and he is her buddy. He decided to lay down in front of her instead of with her. LOL

I think most of you are familiar with the cheap coops that TSC sells (they can also be found at Walmart, but cost more). My 2 BBW are currently in one. I have been bringing them out when the temp reaches the 50's or 60's. Then they come back in in the evening. Last night, they were quiet all day, then began peeping when it got dark. I admit that they are noisy even inside if I don't have a light on for them until at least about ten. I thought it was because they were mad about being inside. Anyway, it was still 70 degrees out when they were carrying on last night.
This morning I put them outside after being fine sitting in the swing with jeans and a T-shirt. They were happy and quiet. Turns out it was only about 47 degrees. Oops! But they are 5-weeks, and seemed fine.
Now for the point of all of this. Are they afraid of the dark? Or, are they fighting sleep? It is 70 now, and it will only get into the fifties come 4 A.M. The wind will be 5 MPH all night. Are they okay if I leave them out there tonight? They are silent right now.
