Turkey Talk for 2014

My (favorite) pet marbled black hen. We have 3 of these hens, but this is the one that comes and sits by me whenever I'm around, purring seductively (at least I assume it would be seductive to a tom turkey) This is our tom (Royal Palm). He was once picked on by the peas, so we separated him to grow a bit more. This time, the tables were turned and we had to separate him for the safety of the peas. He was clearly out for revenge!
Nice pea pen/turkey flight pen. I'd love to see specifics on how big it is and how it was build/designed, basically all the important details needed if someone were to build one themselves. Is that sand on the floor? What do you use to scoop such a large area? The royal palm is a pretty boy, but I agree that the marbled black hen is spectacular. Did she come from Porter
Marbled/mottled are a cross between blue slate & royal palm. When bred together you get palms back out of them. When bred to palm you get palm. Breeding to slate (I think) makes slates. The blue mottleds when bred together will give you blue & lavender palms (my goal for next year).
I pulled the eggs from my broody hen on day 27, when I went to the coop and she was running around without a care in the world. It was in the low 50's and the eggs were nearly cold. She's let them get totally cold several times, but never when it was so cool outside. I left her 2, which they promptly broke one (rotten) and the second was totally gone the next day, with a BBB hen on the nest with a freshly laid BR egg under her. I took 6 to the house, candled and tossed one. These eggs were filthy and I had no idea if they were good, so I cut the top off a tissue box and sat them in that in the hatcher. 2 have hatched, one is working on it and the other 2 I decided to remove today. I wanted to check one last time, so I put them to my ear and tapped. Nothing. So I put the entire box and eggs in the trash in the kitchen while I washed the nasty egg germs off. POP! I ran out to the kitchen-yep, one exploded. I'm feeling pretty lucky it didn't explode on me, it was almost entirely contained in a box and a bag, the house doesn't reek of rotten egg and it wasn't in the hatcher. For those of you who haven't experienced an exploding rotten egg, it's pretty loud and really stinky. Momhunter, I have 2 RP/slates and I'm assuming that's what the last one is too. It didn't work out like I had hoped, but with a first time broody and 4 busy body BBB's in the coop, I'm happy these 3 made it. Well, these 2. Don't want to count my poults before they hatch.
See above for the slate/palm cross genetics. I have a very nice little black mottled tom growing out & am hoping to hatch a blue mottled or 2 to breed him with for next year. The goal (eventually) is blue & lavender palms.

Glad you got some poults to hatch!! I have 12 right now that are all to. RP x BS. Blues, blue mottled and black mottled. Ranging from 1 to 3 weeks of age. sold out of the pure RP for now. Need to sell some of the mixes!!'

Now I'm really confused. Lol (Don't take much!) Id read before that u breed a blue Mottled back to a RP to get a blue palm. Now I guess I must research, cause I'm doing the same "project". OOPSY!

Yes, you can do mottled to mottled or mottled to palm. Not all mottled to mottled throws palm if I remember right. I think you also get the slates back as well. To get blue, you must have blue in at least 1 parent. To get lavender, both parents must carry blue. So the blue mottled to Royal palm would give you 25% blue & 75% black (royal). Blue to blue will give you 25% black, 50% blue & 25% lavender. I will have to check again to see what percentage of slate/palm the mottled to mottled will throw but guessing it would be 25% slate (solid colored), 50% mottled (white feather tips), & 25% palm (white with colored feather tips). Either way it takes a couple generations to get blue & lavender palms. With blue mottled to royal palm you won't get the lavender until the next generation when breeding either 2 blue palms or breeding a blue palm to blue mottled. When breeding blue mottled to blue mottled you have lavender palms right away but more rare in number.

Ok cool. Than I'm not AS confused as I thought. Lol This yr I am breeding Blue slate to RP, therefore trying to get some of the blue mottled. Next year I plan to Bree those back to the RP for blue palms. Maybe the following yr I will attempt to breed to each other for the lavender palms.
Too bad they're not like chickens, mature and laying by fall. Lol

Thanks for this info. I'll be selling the RP/slates. I'm one of the minorities I guess. I stick with one breed only of chickens and turkeys. But holy cow, they are cute!

The last one hatched and it's the RP! Happy about that because it's already spoken for.

I have to stop letting people but them so I will have choices. Lol my BS hen is raising 2 mixed poults now, but everything else has sold. ALL of hers have come out looking the same, a somewhat bluish color, & the 2 she has have some white in their feathering. So I'd assume they are both mottled blue, maybe some just blue? Do the mottled blacks come out black?
