Update on hen-- or did I dream that I already did this?   Hen is on 5ish eggs. 

THe hens are going broody very fast around here: all the 1/2 auburns, 3 of the BR. I really am thinking that once I let one girl  in a pen sit on eggs, the workd gets around and everyone needs to join in. Ihave two other pens in which the eggs are regularly picked up and NO broodies in those groups. 

I wish I knew someone locally that I could trade turkey for beef.  DO I dare say I'm getting tired of roasted turkey . . . maybe I need a few new recipes!!!!!  Who's got a recipe????

Slow cook it, shred it, make enchiladas & quesedillas.

We trade for a grass fed and finished beef each year. But it was never advertised. We just decided to start asking around, and then a friend of a friend who raises a few cattle heard about it and was agreeable to trading, and the rest is history.

My hub's favorite turkey recipe is breakfast sausage, made with fresh ground turkey and real maple syrup. To me it tastes like Jimmy Dean maple breakfast sausage (my family say mine's even better), but without all the additives. And I just picked up a book at the library book sale last night titled "The Turkey Cookbook: 138 new ways to cook America's favorite bird." Haven't had a chance to really sit down and read through it yet, but a quick glance shows some pretty tasty sounding dishes.

Maybe you can PM me with a pound for pound trade and if you dress your own or send it out to a licensed processor, and the beef too.

My kids are alway ready to each those!!  Just never thought of using the turkey. 

I use chicken in them all the time. Don't see why turkey wouldn't work just as well. I just don't have excess turkey yet to try it...lol

Thank you for the replies to my poult leg problems. The semi good news is, the one I sold doesn't have a tendon problem. She sent a picture. When they pulled the leg back to see if the tendon was out, the leg started bleeding on the side above the hock, then puss came out. There was never any sign of an injury until the morning after they had her and she couldn't walk. No idea what happened. She's on antibiotics. So that means, only one of the poults from my pair had tendon problems. The other 2 were from the other person's pair.

I did get a splint on the baby I have and he's now walking on the leg with the tendon splinted in place. Maybe it'll work, but I didn't think it'd hurt to try.

I've been trying to get the feed store to get a different feed since they started carrying what I'm now feeding. I'll talk to them again this weekend. I did add kelp to the feed. I've done it before, but not consistently. I gave them some beef heart a while ago, but, of course, they think it's poison.

Really great work! You can do so much with babies if you tackle the problem early. After 5 days the toe is probably stable, but keep a close eye on it for the next 1-2 weeks. There are a few birds that will need to have the splint applied periodically over the next several weeks to keep the toe from drifting back a bit -- kind of like needing to wear a retainer for a little while after you get your braces off!

They are happy birds today!
