In my experience . . .

raise up youngsters separately from adults
they are healthier when they are in the open and not cooped up tight
the larger the area to range the healthier
If food and water are readily avail able,  the youngsters dont stray too far and benefit from having chickens among them to help them stay in the area-- like baby sitters. And everyone stayed in that paddock.
Babies learn best when they have an older bird to imitate.
Poults can be given a high protein level than the adults so separating the groups can be beneficial on that point.

Fencing needs to be sturdy-- nothing they can get tangled in. 

Oh-- have a warm place to brood them all with a reliable heat source. 

Thanks so much ya we will prob just keep in pasture or fence them in there own spot with access to warm place or shelter? Using field fence most likly... Thanks so much I actually have a place right now that will prob due that we used for mini horses...

We removed our 3 BR's two weeks ago to their own run and coop as one of the hens kept getting sick.. nasty yellow poo and lethargic and not eating ( they free ranged 1/3 acre with chickens).. Since moving them and treating them with AVC, Cayenne pepper and Oregano oil she has completely cleared up and is just as active and feeding as the other two. We currently have 1 Tom and 2 Hens. we have them in a run (for now) that is roughly 40 feet long by 20-25 wide, their coop is alittle on the small side ..only about 10x12 with their feeder and ladder roost. We plan on expanding both their run and their coop but wonder how big the three of them will need.. They just turned 5 months on Oct 5th.. The tom is strutting and gobbling now and trying to keep the hens close to him. I am looking forward to next spring and the laying season but want to make sure I give them the space they need..

Ha, ha, very funny. You have no idea. The termites out here are absolutely horrible and they are everywhere. Plus this is a desert, there is no way I could grow and water catnip everywhere. I doubt it could even take our full sun and heat. Mint planted here needs lots of water and some shade.

you can buy a stake you drive in the ground to kill and keep termites away or dead. My friend had to do it on a house in New Mexico. Ask at home depot about them.

Funny question but anyone ever had a chicken thinks he's a turkey? I have a roo that was hatched with my turkeys that runs with them and mounts them when there laying down???? Bantam at that...

I have a few chickens that think they are turkeys. They roost at night in the trees with the turkeys. They follow the turkeys all day long and ignore the chickens....These were chicks that were raised by my Turkey hen... When she hatched out a clutch of turkey chicks in September, one of the chicks saw her and went running to her "mother" only to be run off by her. I felt so sorry for the poor chick.

I am not sure what I will do with the one chick, she is close to laying age now and refuses to go into a coop.

That must be a sight, lol. No chickens here do that, but three of my peacocks do.

Although we have now separated the turkeys from the chickens we had one of the pullets that was raised with the turkeys that would squat for the tom but not for the rooster... I just kinda made a joke about it because I got a few eggs from my sister in laws flock to hatch with the turkeys and this little pullet was the only chicken that hatched, I bought some more from the feed store to add but she was the only one that did it, dumb chicken from my crazy SIL's chicken flock
