What are Turkey s like on a free range basis, would they be safe from foxes, are they to big for a fox?

I free range my turkeys. I have not lost an ADULT turkey to a predator. I have lost a baby to them. My turkeys seldom go into the coop even though it is available to them. They roost on the roof of the coop or my dog kennel fence at night. I have 2 babies about 6 weeks old, they even roost fairly high off the ground. I doubt a fox could get them. The predator that got my baby was a bald eagle.

My adults are too large for them now, I think. They do a good job of hiding when a bird of prey flies over. Free range turkeys are fun to have and people seem to like them when they come over. If someone drives into the yard, they are right there to greet them.

If I step out the door of the house they come running to me. They follow me like little puppies wherever I go around the farm. If I open the machine shed and go in, they will go in unless I post the dog at the door to keep them out. (which is what I normally do).

If we go for a walk around the acreage, we have an entourage consisting of 2 dogs, 12 turkeys and the couple of chickens the turkey hens raised.

BEWARE, turkeys love sitting on vehicles! Are biggest grieve is them flying onto the roof of the vehicles.

I am biased, but I suggest you try free range turkeys.
