Silkie--- dogs tied up would never pass inspection here. Everythiing here us aimed at making any animal production near to impossible for the small farms and homestead type set ups. Just crazy. I plan to train my newest dog/pup to be with me at all times around the farm. WIll need a good sit/ stay in place. lol

How many hens do you have with your Toms?

Not enough, LOL.

I only have 9 turkeys, they all free range and are kind of pets. 

I have 5 Toms and 4 hens.  One tom and one hen are "red slate" some kind of cross that turned them from blue slates to a red, I will be keeping them separate and breeding them together.

The others are all slate blues. 2 toms are blues, 2 are self blue, I will be keeping only 1 blue, the rest need to be gone or in freezer camp before they become over bearing to my hens.

Too bad you're so far away. I would love to have a lavender (self blue) tom to go with my blue hens. My original tom was lavender so they threw all blue & lavender babies. My new tom is blue, so getting black in the mix now too.

I hate his dogs with a passion. Would be so happy if they all disappeared. They never shut up & are always messing up something of mine.

awwwww, sounds like unhappy dogs.  I only  tied mine out while we worked on a dog run design. These are hunting dogs according to my son. Very short chains & no attention except to feed them. I do not agree with the way he treats them at all. Every time they get loose, they refuse to go to him. They run straight to me. They know I treat them better even though I don't like them. I at least pet them when I walk by.

if the dog doe not come to the owner when called, it is not a hunting dog. IMHO

I have hunting dogs there are a few commands they need to know. come. sit. stay, heel and close are a few of them. I let my hunting dogs free range with my birds, they would never dare touch one.

I am on the waiting list to get a puppy from a nice dog that hunts. SHe is a member of the family and lives in the house. I think it is great to give a dog a job BUT the handler needs to create a relationship with the dog. CLearly the dogs view you a someone that is nicer to them. Poor dogs.

My dogs worked to protect my property and me . . . and could sleep outside like in the summer, or inside on my very good rug, with each dog having his own crate to use when wanted. I gave up letting the dogs sleep on the bed when I went from two to four. They are PIGS in a super king size bed. lol

What type of hunting dog are you getting @Arielle ? We have looked into hunting dogs and have seen a few types we liked that seemed like they might fit us as a family. We likely wont get one but it has been something we have discussed for a possibility later in life. DH is newly into hunting and maybe one day if he is an avid hunter we will look into it. I plan to get my hunting license also. We currently have 2 dogs now that are very good dogs but we never trained them fully and hunting wouldn't be their expertise. If we had known 7years ago that we would be into hunting they might have made the BEST hunting dogs, but cant turn back time.

Kennel or crate training is a must. It gives the dog it's own space and is the building block for all training. It also makes potty training a breeze. I will let my dogs on the bed once in a while for a grandpa nap. These two are the first dogs we ever truly trained with commands and the works, I will never have one partially trained again. They are so easy to care for when trained. Of course, the pup (7 years old) is not as bright as her mother, but she tries hard.
