Saw 4 successful matings ( turkey) this afternoon. Both toms and roosters have had several pretty good fights today. And got my first chicken eggs of the year.

Hopefully spring is around the corner.

One question. My main breeder tom is a bourbon red. Last year he was gentle with the hens so I kept him. This year from what I have seen he is pretty rough and pecks there head while he is treading. Is this because its early in the breeding season and he's frustrated or has his demeanor just changed in a year.

Keep or cull. I have 3 other toms to choose from.

I have seen one of my toms do the head pecking but I watched closer and he is not hurting her, it looks more like a kiss to me. My hen has not had any sores or spots from it. I would just check on her head to be sure. Good luck with your season.

Thanks

My bourbon pecks the hens head, from what I can tell it is to get her to lift her tail.. All three turkeys are 10 months old today so I figure its inexperience?? I too have checked both the hens heads and there is no signs that he is causing any sores or damage.

MIne that I posted a picture of has cleared up. I have no scabbed heads, as of today, tomorrow that could change,,

Good luck on them gaining manners..
