Turkey Talk for 2014

So this morning I have come to the decision that my one and only Tom is going to be heading to the freezer. He is either being entirely to rough on the hens or entirely too clumsy or something but he is doing major damage to the hens. A few have some pretty severe nasty gashes on their sides.

He is separated from the hens as of this morn and it looks like one hen might not make it, I may need to put her down. I couldn't feel more awful.

So sorry.

I had to separate my Bronze from his hen due to the fact he got her side pretty good. It was just barely skinned so it healed pretty quickly. But if they don't have a Sr. tom to learn from I guess it makes learning harder for them. My bronze is now doing better but we still monitor them.
My toms are having trouble trying to figure this out also. One I have to stand there and turn him around. He tries to mate her side and after I turn him he starts all over. But apparently he is doing something right, as my eggs are fertile. lol

I have a bourbon red tom that is doing the same thing. I have one hen with a good size gash she is doing better after a couple of days.

But anorher hen he mated with is severely lacerated on both sides. I have both injured hens isolated. The tom Is now in jail so he can't get to the ones I don't have penned. He is headed for the freezer. The badly hurt hen I don't think will make it. She can walk but she has to spread her wings out for balance. I did see her eat and drink so time will tell.

That is so sad about the hen and the tom. My own have troubles. They insist on involving me in their mating rituals. The hen comes over to me and squats knowing the tom will follow me anywhere.
I left for several hours the other day and left the gate ajar for the dog. when I returned home I saw my tom strutting in front of 3 people cowering on a porch. I believe he was looking for me. He probably heard a woman's voice and went on down the road.
I hate that your hen is hurt. She may recover with time and rest. Also hate your tom is going into the freezer. They aren't brilliant but they do have character.

He is a Tom I raised up from a poult, he is going on 3yrs old. He was the beta Tom. The Alpha Tom I had I ended processed for Thanksgiving, don't ask me why I chose him, because he was a good Tom. It was just a random choice come process day. I regret the choice very much now.
