Turkey Talk for 2014

@chicken pickin get yourself some turkey saddles to protect your hens.

That is a great suggestion!

Im pretty sure Im going to process the Tom. Im not sure I plan to continue turkeys much longer, I have always liked them very much but I don't love them like I do the chickens and chickens don't give me as many headaches as the turkeys do. I have had turkeys for almost 3yrs and I do adore the hens so I may keep a few hens for eating eggs, we'll see...

It is amazing how those spit second decisions over which bird to keep and which to cull comes back to haunt us. A male you think wil be kind and gentle turns into a nightmare when his nemesis is removed..

Best luck in the future with him sorry it happened. good luck..

Question about this egg?

What do you think a double yolk or a turkey egg?

I found this in one of the nests today. The turkey hens do go into the coop. The large egg weighs 3.75 ounces the little one weighs 2.20.

It is not speckled and is not real dark but I have 3 young turkeys and I have no idea what shades their eggs will be...

It looks like a chicken egg from an old hen. While the shape looks a bit like a turkey egg, the cream shell color and tan to brown spots are not there. Turkey eggs also have a "waxy" finish to the touch.

There in lies the catch I have all young pullets and no old hens....

There are no spots which is why I tend to agree with you but it is HUGE!!

Sometimes young pullets occasionally lay huge eggs until their system gets regulated.

I also will say I think it is a large probably double yolker from a chicken. Turkey eggs are pale and have speckles. Even at times when they lack speckles the eggs are still very pale cream.

I vote chicken egg.
