Turkeys and more!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. I have often read that turkeys can be as friendly as dogs. Guess that isn't often true. The only thing that is certain, is they are delicious and I love having turkey for lunch or dinner.

Good morning, and welcome to BYC. The behavior of the toms will become even worse in the spring. Excellent advice has been given on penning, relocating or eating. They are fully capable of causing injury. Good luck in resolving this problem.

They may outgrow it. Putting a stop to their attempts would help before it becomes a habit. That's where penning them up may help.

As they mature they will probably start to fight as well amongst themselves. Do you plan on getting some hens? Eventually they will want to mate. Without turkey hens they will try to mate your other poultry probably and that won't turn out well.

Turkeys are great birds, but they need to know they are turkeys. If they bond too much with other species, including humans they will include all the species in their behaviors.

Some people do okay mixing turkeys with other poultry species, and others like me have had problems from it. Turkeys can be troublemakers. :)

I don't plan to get any hens right now, if I get more birds I'd get more guinea hens and chickens.

I really enjoy and love the turkeys and find them to be super fun (but I may be the only one because they don't ever attack me.) They walk all over with me. But they tend to go after my dogs and go as far as getting on my decks and trying to attack them through the sliding glass door.

My group shares the same space so if I pen the turkeys the others won't be able to hide in their coop. I do worry about my little chickens and ducks with the turkeys though... I would hate to have to turn my boys into dinner.
