Turkeys For 2013

They're still young (around 10 weeks) so I expect they still have some growing to do. Right now they're only as tall as my LF chickens. They should stay pretty small. ALBC says toms average 13 lbs., hens average 8 lbs, but I'm not sure how tall. We got our hatching eggs from flocksalot & pawtraitart, so they may have a better answer.

Thank you so much! I know that my daughters FIL has some rp turkeys and she said they get to weigh 25 lbs.
I appreciate your help and info so much!

Haven't posted on here in a long time. I got some RP's this spring, they were hatched April 17. I only ordered 4 with some chicks but they have done great! I think I may have 1 tom and 3 hens but I am not sure how to tell. Also how big a nest will an RP require for laying?

This is the one I am sure is a tom. The other 3 are quite a bit smaller than this one and none of them are strutting. As you can see they are still very young. About 3 months in this pic taken a few days ago.

Notice how this one's head is getting completely bald. The hens will maintain a mohawk strip of feathers down the top of their heads, also their caruncles will not be as pronounced and their snoods will stay small. Also compare the thickness of their legs, the toms have thicker legs. And the hens have a more feminine head. I've given my turkeys nest boxes about 1-1/2 feet long by a foot wide but only about half of them use the boxes. A lot of times they prefer to nest on the ground in a secluded corner. Newly laying hens sometimes take a while to get with the program and lay their eggs at random. I have a young Narragansett hen that habitually laid her eggs while sitting on the roost. I finally took the roost out. Now she lays in the nest boxes sometimes and sometimes just out in the middle of the pen. I hope next year she will be better.

I got my Blue Slate turkeys age two days old on May 1. I can't believe how fast they've grown. I feed fermented turkey grower now. I think there is one tom and four females. The one I think is a tom tries to gobble and drops his wings and spreads his tail. A couple of what I think are females
immediately drop into a sit.

The barrel nest on the 2"x4" cradle was made by my husband for the breeding pair I hope to get out of these five.

I just love your birds! they are so beautiful!

Thought I would share with all my turkey friends . . .those that love turkeys, NOT that you are turkeys, lol . . . I am buying a presto 7 qt pressure canner. Do wish I could buy american made but finiances are too tight right now. ANy way, I'm planning to roast a few birds and can them to save freezer space. Hoping to order it this weekend for next week. Time to knock down the feed bill and lessen the chores.

DOes anyone else can?
