Turkeys For 2013

Here are a couple pictures of my second set of turkey poulets this yr. Is it normal for the hens to lay more eggs while raising a clutch of poulets? Anyway, the mother rejected the babies (10) so I had them in the brooder. Something got in & killed 6 of the babies, so only 4 are left. My chocolate chick is the first like this my turkey's have hatched. Seems to be slightly smaller than the 3 regular Bourbon Reds.

They just love getting out and free ranging. I generally sit out with them, but if I get up to shoo the chickens away from the woods, they come running after me peeping their heads off. Since the brooder proved unsafe, and they needed warmth, I put them in w/3 Silky hens that have babies the same age as the poulets. Works for now.

I was thinking of trying to build a couple of turkey transport cages. I have 6-7 turkeys that will probably be brought to the processor down the road from me for thanksgiving. I don't have cages and the processors wont have any available. They can not be in dog crates etc. They suggested to me to build a few crates to hold 2 turkeys each. I was just curious if any of you have built something for that purpose? If so Id love to see pics and hear a few details. I may start a thread in another section but cant decide which forum would be best, Turkey, Meat bird, Coop/run construction?
