Turning a profit off of your eggs?

Doesn't really matter what country you're in if someone else is footing the bills.
And yes I do pay for stuff of my own to support my animals like I have to pay for my horses hay. Plus I’ve made enough money to cover all the costs and have money for to buy the chicken later. It’s just I’m told to save the money.

Okay. So maybe I didn’t exactly make a proper profit but at least I made something. Maybe my parents were covering the bills but it still gives me a taste of learning. Yes I wasn’t entirely sure by what Profit meant but after I looked it up I realised I wasn’t turning profit I was doing this cause I love owning chickens. They are such blessing in all our lives :)

I agree

No need to be overly sensitive. You learned what the word profit means, and you’ve learned that you have a hobby (rather than a business in the black). A hobby provides enjoyment, a business provides profit. If you get both:profit and enjoyment, then that is great! The fact that you make enough to help defray costs of your hobby is commendable. The fact that your parents are both supportive in many ways (space/land, feed/supplies, and likely positive emotional support relating to your hobby), is really special, since many don’t have such a good combo of support.

Good luck with your chickens and eggs!

Thank you. That’s very kind :)

It can be done but it's ROUGH.
I've calculated the economics of it. With bedding (which is about $20/year for me), feed, and hatching out my own replacements, I can make about $1/dozen profit on eggs (selling at $3/doz) before paying myself or overhead costs like the coop and fencing itself. Enough chickens to produce 6 eggs a day would take about 1/2 hour each day so...
So if you can:
Nab a coop for nearly free.
Get a good price on feed and bedding.
Hatch your own chicks for cheap....

You can make a whopping $0.50/day, or even better, $1/hour. :p

Now I could double, or even quadruple the number of chickens I have without a significant increase in time spent on the birds, to bring that up to a grand total of $2/day or $4/hour.... But if you're looking to make real profits you need some automation, bulk prices on feed (I'm talking 1 ton amounts), heavy culling and large numbers of birds. That's how The Man does it, as it were. That's why animals are not treated well, demands for cheap food reigns, and eggs at the grocery are $1/dozen.

Now if I were able to raise my price to a full $5/doz (which some ppl around here have!) without increasing other costs I could make enough to potentially cover overhead/pay myself something substantial. But then I am caring for 30 chickens, which is very different than my small hobby flock of 7-8.

So where you are and what you can do to make a profit changes largely based on scale. And for most small breeders? It's not worth nickle and diming yourself to death to think of $0.50/day.

But that will also increase your feed and bedding costs...so not a direct multiplier. ;) But I getcha!
