Twiching?

do you think it would be an ear mite or is it poultry mites...anyway Im heading out the door to check it out. I don't have a magnifying glass but I'll figure something out
be back in a few

I don't see anything....Would it be on the outside of the opening or should I be looking deeper? then I will need to find a magnifying glass
I'll wait till sundown and see if the mites would come out then....
but I read something about mites often affecting the ears nostrils and eyes especially at night. So I'll check again later anyway

Look in the ear canal for the mites, should look like tiny black or red specks. How many of your hens are shaking their heads? Are they gasping or grunting or stretching their necks? Any sneezing?
Good idea checking your birds at night in the coop.

they are all doing it it. they will often scratch at their heads now that I think about it
the odd neck stretching once in a blue moon, I'm not worried about that. They will often eat stuff they are not supposed to.
it gets worse when I use hay or straw so the whole coop including nestboxes are filled with sawdust
Something I didn't know, for lice treat the bird, for mites treat the coop! that makes so much sense now. It would explain why at the beginning when I threw in the red hens from the farm down the road I saw lice and treated the birds, the lice problem was gone but they still keep twitching. if it's mites which I'm sure it is they don't live on the bird so Ive been wasting money all winter
I saw somebody post that they sprayed with 1/3 javex and 2/3 water. is that something that could work? I'm not crazy about the organic stuff but if it means I don't have to go buy something I don't need it works for me

I jut got back from the coop. its 10 pm so its definetly dark. I saw absolutely nothing. ears are as clear as can be DH said he could see their skull haha
my only thought is maybe I didn't wait long enough after turning off the lights
Should I go back in 30 mins? I think I probably will.....just to have a clear conscience

One other thing to try. This will be a 2 person task. You're going to be checking for gapeworm. Have your DH hold one of your hens while you get a Q-tip and stick it down one inch into her throat. Gently swab her throat and remove the Q-tip. If you see a "Y" shaped red in color worm on the Q-tip, that's gapeworm and they will all need to be wormed.
