My 5-6 week old black australorp started twitching a week ago. This one is the first one that started twitching and occasionally sneezing. Despite separating them, the whole flock is now. They’ll even twitch while asleep or resting.

Treating with - vetrx, nutri drench, and poultry cell in their water.

Nothing seems to be working. What could this be?

Hi, and welcome to BYC! I wish it were on a happier note.

Are they twitching their whole body or just their heads?

What have your chicks and chickens been getting for feed?

What is their bedding? It could be causing allergies.

Is there anything like air fresheners, fumes, fresh paint, etc. in the area of where they are?

What is their bedding? It could be causing allergies. WE USE TSC FLAKE PREMIUM PINE SHAVINGS

Is there anything like air fresheners, fumes, fresh paint, etc. in the area of where they are? NOPE, NOT AT ALL

Okay.

Just making sure the grit isn't being mixed into their feed. That could also cause problems. It's supposed to be separate.

It could be a sinus infection.

I thought if it's one bird with head shakes, it's a neurological thing as I have had a silkie now and then do that, and it's Vit. E and scrambled eggs. Since you said it's your whole flock, that can't be it.

For a respiratory/sinus infection, they may need an antibiotic.

You're doing the right thing giving them vitamins too!

Tylosin an antibiotic helpful with MG and respiratory symptoms. Dosage is 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days. Here is one place to order it:

Thank you so much, I truly appreciate your help! I do mix the grit in sometimes with their food, so I’m glad you mentioned that.

I’ll look up the antibiotic now. I’ve been giving them vitamin supplements but nothing seems to help. I’m going to put the grit separate, see if that works. I may take the one that’s been shaking the longest to the vet. I don’t even know what that will even cost 🫣

Triple the cost, at least, of that Tylosin! If they're sneezing and shaking heads, and your vitamin therapy isn't doing anything, I'd put mine on it. I'd be so afraid they'd take a turn for the worse. Your vitamins might be what's keeping them somewhat healthy.

It’s strange, because other than that they seem completely fine. Eating and drinking, playing, their poop looks normal. I do see they’re getting neck feathers in, could that be causing them to twitch and scratch their heads?

This is what most of their heads look like, this one more than others.
