Look in the ear canal for the mites, should look like tiny black or red specks. How many of your hens are shaking their heads? Are they gasping or grunting or stretching their necks? Any sneezing?
Good idea checking your birds at night in the coop.
they are all doing it it. they will often scratch at their heads now that I think about it
the odd neck stretching once in a blue moon, I'm not worried about that. They will often eat stuff they are not supposed to.
it gets worse when I use hay or straw so the whole coop including nestboxes are filled with sawdust
Something I didn't know, for lice treat the bird, for mites treat the coop! that makes so much sense now. It would explain why at the beginning when I threw in the red hens from the farm down the road I saw lice and treated the birds, the lice problem was gone but they still keep twitching. if it's mites which I'm sure it is they don't live on the bird so Ive been wasting money all winter
I saw somebody post that they sprayed with 1/3 javex and 2/3 water. is that something that could work? I'm not crazy about the organic stuff but if it means I don't have to go buy something I don't need it works for me
