Twisted wing tips in Sebastopol geese...

Quote:
The goose in the photo has TWT, since I've had the opportunity to examine her personally I know for fact she has TWT.
One does not have to be an experienced anything to look at a wing tip and see that is twists and curls.
My point in showing this goose as an example is to put to rest a lot of people worries and concerns over TWT
and that its not always as bad as some people make it out to be.

Cottage Rose, you have backed up my point whole heartedly.

She doesn't look bad for supposedly having TWT and I mentioned that in a thickly feathered bird we might not even see anything to wonder about. With this bird I was very clear in stating that she APPEARED to not have TWT but just some stiff primaries which you yourself have just stated is a very common occurance within this breed. You stating that she very definately DOES comes from your advantageous position as owner and your ability to observe more than just a photograph. You have been able to "examine her personally" which we out here in the wild frontier of the virtual world

cannot. Another very common occurance within this breed is people who do not know the difference between stiffer primaries, twisted wing tips, angel wing or some combination of those characteristics. Perhaps you are able to look at her wingtip and see that it twists and curls but I will stand by my observation that these photographs do not provide an obvious visual aid backing up what you have stated. They STILL, unless my monitor needs some adjusting, show nothing but some pretty stiff flights. davek103#yahoo.com www.sebastopols.freeforums.org

Heavens no! Why would you think you need to do that?!

Besides when they're regrowing their new feathers
which yours very well may be this time of year,
(or when those photos were taken)
sometimes the primaries can look rather stiff and
stick out awkwardly as they are growing out.
Unless you're showing them I wouldn't worry about it.
They're just fine and lovely.

Do I need to get rid of them and start over?

Are the birds with the stiff flights youngsters or adults headed into their second winter? Young birds very often have longer, narrower and stiffer flights than they will as adults. But as in everything related to Sebastopols - not always.

Stiff primaries which are not straight, normal primaries are not the most desired but are not a DQ either. If it is your own priority to not have them the right stock and constant selection may get you what you want, to a degree, but most likely at the expense of feather which would be so soft as to be useless. Jutting primaries often means that they are not quite all the way in and opened up and once the entire feather is out of the sheath they seem to relax a bit and lay flatter to the bird's body. Again, sometimes.

It's everyone's personal decision as to what they want to breed for or against and how they want their own stock to look. SOP requirements complicate those issues if you want birds that you feel please you and also fit the SOP. This is my own opinion only but I honestly feel that there is way more to any breed than just one feature. With Sebastopols that means that there can and likely will be wing issues of various types providing consternation for the breeders. As Cottage Rose has stated it seems to be the nature of the beast. For as worked up as so many seem to get about one feature one frustrated judge suggested that we should just grow out and chop off the wings, entering just those wings in the shows. Kind of crude but I think we get the point. Negatives like wing issues get focused on sometimes because they are easy and obvious. There is a lot goes into a good Sebastopol and a 100% lack of so called faults still doesn't mean that we have a good bird with anything useful to offer the eye or the breeding yard. In the end though what you want to focus on in your own program is and will be up to you. [email protected] www.sebastopols.freeforums.org

Cottage Rose, I will not disagree that as owner you have the advantage in ascertaining that this goose does indeed have TWT. But even your own wording doesn't support the idea that she has something that WE CAN SEE

except for some stiff primaries. Both can be issues with Sebastopols but they are issues that can occur one without the other. [email protected] www.sebastopols.freeforums.org

Heather, Dave H. has been doing this for so long and this is valuable information for you to hang on to. The only other person I know that has had sebastopols for almost 40 years is Dave K. so I think the information you received is out of a lot of experience. I think Dave K's e-mail address is on his posts and he is more than willing to answer any questions to.

I'm looking for a super nice female sebastopol goose (white)...do you have any for sale or know of anyone who's selling? I would like to end up with a SQ trio or quad. I am down to my last PQ gander who is going to be sold at the show in a few weeks...

Thank you! I'd much prefer a fully feathered female over any goslings and I can't even GIVE away my ganders it seems...so I don't want to hatch any more and risk getting another gander or I'd hatch my own eggs.

I have been keeping an eye out for a nice female but it seems people only sell pairs, have a huge waiting list, etc. I do have another female from Holderread's coming in a month with my sister but I haven't seen photos and she's a $150 so we'll see what I end up with.
