Two Feet Of Show And The Chickens Are Thriving!

Just wondering how you are doing Dangerouschicken. I hear you guys are in for a Blizzard today. We have four inches of snow and I can't even imagine what you are dealing with

its terrible more snow and cold,my neighbor gave me a ride in the tractor to the top of the driveway and I used the company truck to go to town got my birds some feed ,talk about price gouging,16 bucks for chick starter, last time i spend a penny in that store unless we are still snowed in,but I wont like it

Oh boy.... we are STILL WITHOUT WATER! Day 6 or something here... I can't remember any more. The pump was unrepairable, so we have to wait for a replacement, then installation. Who knows how long it will be?

There is three feet of snow outside and all powder. Great if you want to go skiing, not great if you have toddlers pent up in the house all day. They want to play in the snow, but it is over their heads

We just keep melting snow water for the toilet, etc. Thanks for your concerns. Thankfully the chickens are fine and we are all still healthy!

Hi dangerousChicken, I just found this thread and am totally amazed that your chickens are still laying!!

This is the most snow we've had in Portland since I can remember, and I've lived here all my life. We're iced in today with a thick layer over the 10" of snow we received yesterday. Our chickens are so spoiled with hot oatmeal every morning, fresh water, even a red light for a little heat, but still not a single egg... since last August when they all molted and decided to shut down production for the winter.

I hope you have water soon. I wish we could drive up there and bring you some. Keep us posted.

Oh man, I can't imagine what I'd do if my girls stopped laying for that long. My ladies are definitely not happy here in Portland. They won't go out in the snow and their water keeps freezing. They are ticked. But I read the suggestions for giving them warm food so I started that tonight. Kung Pao, my only layer so far, stopped laying yesterday, about five days into the snow. So I hope giving her a little warm bean soup will get her revved back up.

Wow - just found this thread. I'm so sorry to hear about your pump. I was just on the phone with co-worker/friend. She was out visiting her BF in Hood River. They closed down I-84 and she's stuck. Can't get into work. That's OK. We work for the County and they just announced that they are closed tomorrow -- that's the first time in 20 years!

Lots of snow, then ice, more snow, and now more ice. My girls are funny, the Speckled Sussex loves it. She still came out and foraged until today. The Americauna likes it, wants to come out, but only comes out in short spurts. The cochin wants little, or nothing, to do with it.

Today the Sussex and Cochin tried to come out -- they looked like Bambi on ice. They couldn't get a grip on the ice and were staggering all over the place. The cochin found something to grip - a pole - and stayed put, I had to go rescue her. The sussex slipped and slided all the way back to the coop behind me. They didn't come out again until I went and shoveled their run and tossed the straw around a bit.

Hang in there everyone! DC I'll be thinking of you and your family!

Yeah, I meant to add: it's a million times better in Portland than it is out where the OP is. I can't imagine having to go through that. I don't deal so well with cold if I have to be inconvenienced in any way.

DC- glad your girls are still laying for you....I think since we have had this snow I have gotten 4 eggs total from our 25 chickens!! they wont come out of the coop...(I dont blame them....they have a nice cadet heater in there).
MIL was down this way 2 days ago, and drove home to The Dalles, she said it was a nightmare!!They stopped in Hood River (my step daughter lives there) and MIL said it was a mess.
We havent left the house for days, and probably wont but to get our christmas tree tomorrow (maybe). Luckly our well and pipes are ok, but our septic is a different story. We dont know if since the ground is so frozen that it wont leach int othe ground, OR the tank is full.....we had one bathroom fill up 4 inches with poo, and yuck when we ran the washing machine. Called the landlord (we have lived here 3 yrs) and he dosent know when the tank was emptied last. So we called some septic tank pumpers..and most of them are saying the gauges in the trucks are froze up so they cant do anything for a few days. We had to open the clean out outside and I am scared to go around the corner of the house to see what kind of mess is over there (kind of makes me glad the chickens wont come out of the coop.....hate to think of them going over there and feasting on the septic back up)

Just found this thread. Sending thoughts and good vibes to you DC for running water asap. You guys really got hit.

I'm in Portland up on Mt. Tabor. My girls are not happy at all about the weather. Two of my four are laying. One will venture out to the run for a few minutes and then stand on one foot in the snow. The others just huddle together in a corner picking on each other. They are quite cranky at this point. Hoping for a thaw soon!!!
