Well I just had my first experience with a chicken thief. About an hour and a half ago my two inside dogs were acting strange. My wife and I couldn't figure out why. I just went out to lock up my coop/building for the night and peeked into my large brooder. I had 6 delaware chicks in there along with some 13 banty white leghorns. 4 of the delawares and 2 of the leghorns are gone. The top of the brooder was covered with a wire top...

Odd thing is I have drills, saws, hammers laying around in there because I'm doing some work and they didn't touch any of that. Two weeks ago someone stole a shovel though.

Just frustrating because they did it while I was home and on the board flapping my gums/fingers no less.

That's beyond frustrating.. it's down right nasty!

That is so frustrating, I'd try to come up with some sorta trap to catch them or find out who they are. Last fall someone stole my 2 largest pumpkins I had near the road, for display 3 weeks before halloween. I was home when it happened but didn't notice until my wife came home and said they were gone. This year I'm planning on putting a couple near the end of my driveway but I'll be filling them with some horse manure first.

Frankly it ticks me off big time, but it's even worse because they did it while I was at home. Makes me want to put a sign in my yard just to let someone know if they come back and I'm home they will be shot.

What sucks is my wifes sister just flew in from Wisconsin. She said she thought she saw someone in my front yard while we were sitting here watching tv... well I was watching tv and gabbing here.

You not alone my friend . SAME thing happened to me about a month ago .

I went out back to feed and water . I had completed the feeding and needed to rush inside for bathroom . Needless to say , since I was coming RIGHT BACK , I did not lock the cages , I was inside MAYBE 10 minutes and returned to find 4 of my ( at the time 8 week old RIR chicks and 2 austrolorp's GONE. Neighbors behind my house spotted the thieves and escorted me to their home . I recovered 4 of them that they had in a cage behind their house , other 2 we under their house and could not be caught . BUT , I returned home , called POLICE and they came , MADE and arrest and I filed charges .

HOW old were you chicks and HOW many were taking ? SO SORRY for this happning , TRUST me , I was SO MAD had BLOOD in my eyes and could of BIT thru nails .

At first I thought it might just be some roaming kid, but after thinking about it I just don't see how a child could control 6 chick's. The delawares were 4 weeks old and what's bad is I really wanted to get at least a trio to start breeding them. I'm positive they took all of my 'hens' leaving me with what I suspect are roosters. My wife's going to love me. I have to leave for a business trip in the morning so I hope she doesn't get too mad when I ask her to go pick me up 6 more delawares tomorrow....

They also took two banties that were 5 weeks old.

At least I got lucky on one thing. They didn't touch my pairs of serama. Ummm Luann has a huge investment in those and that woulda been close to a deal breaker for me.

I'd run some "juice" to the door latch of your coop when you are not using it. A nice jolt of electricity would probably put an end to this kind of snatch and run.

I'd be furious and out for blood, myself. Then I would plot preventative measures and revenge!
