Two questions for gun control people

You seem to think that making AR15s illegal would be legal.

Just a hypothetical example to illustrate a point. I understand the doubt that you raise in the case of the US regarding particular types of gun and the move to ban or limit them.

You are more of a gun expert than I, Dennis. What long barrelled gun would you suggest for reasonable defensive use around the home land to supplement a hand gun?

I had in mind a .22 Ruger or CZ but today handled a couple of Remington pump action shot guns. One of those might be a better deterrent than a .22, provided that my wife could also manage it. Rather nice to handle too. Made me feel like an old time London bank robber except that they weren't sawn off! The cost would be about the same as for a .22 but the ammunition would probably be more expensive.

Would a shotgun be more suitable?

I'm still hung up on the fact that people honestly expect the problem individuals to listen to new laws. Most of the shootings that have happened have been with guns that weren't even theirs to shoot. Laws that infringe on the rights of law abiding citizens will do nothing to stop the violence of the loonies. The only good idea I've heard so far is taxing ammo more and using the money for mental health. Though I'm sure seeking and receiving help would still remain a bureaucratic mess regardless of the ammo tax dollars.

Most of the proposed items I've heard will only control guns, not the people who use them wrongly. The problem has been the people all along, not the guns. The last assault rifle ban was a failure, like any other prohibition. You could by pass it by buying the parts to make the gun, and it wouldn't be registered. Illegal, but totally and easily attainable.

What happens when you ban anything? The sellers change and the price goes up.

No matter how you change the laws, the people who are doing the most wrong commit suicide anyways. Do you think they care about the consequences? They don't. Make whatever law you want, the problem individuals won't abide by it. Say they're successful in removing all guns and making them unattainable. The crazy people will switch to bombs. The people committing these atrocities have not been lacking in intelligence, they would have found alternate means if the guns were not available.

What is good for home defense? Well this largely depends where you live and what the criminal is expected to bring to the "party" . While you might be good out in the country with a 12 gauge you might need something semi auto in other places. I live on a military post the thing i can reach the quickest is a Judge Public Defender revolver. I can load that one with .410 shells and regular rounds as well as several specialty rounds. A few miles up in Louisville we have several not so great parts of town with gang activity, i know for fact that AK, fully automatics and other illegal stuff is used by the bloods, crips.... If i had to live there i'd have something else with more firepower and a faster fire rate. In other areas we deal with large dangerous animals that require yet different stopping power. Last but not least , might already have mentioned that before, semi autos with a large clip, are great for people who are dealing with the Pig Bomb. They could poss. deal with a group of 5-12 wild boars that have to be killed as they are illegal and cause a great amount of damage to your garden/farm/land. So what you need for defense depoends on your area. But for your average self defense needs i prefer a Judge Public Defender .

Exactly what is going to happen if the government banns assault rifles? They will make an average guy who may have wanted one for his own protection defenseless against an idiot with an outlawed assault rifle. It is an extreme tragedy when a screwed up individual commits mass murder on a group of unarmed people. I promise you if there is one building filled with people that are unarmed, and another right down the road filled with people that have guns on their body, the lunatic however deranged in the head he might be who has planned a shooting spree, will hit the unarmed building before the armed with his assault rifle. Only thing that is going to happen is to unarm law abiding citizens and make it way much easier for an insane individual. The sad truth about life, is violence has been around since the begining of man and will remain whether it is with assault weapons, bombs, poision etc.

My carry gun is the polymer one. Good gun for short range.. I have the AR if I need range though.
Dont have that yet. We will buy three new shotguns . My hubby saw a tactial 12 gauge at Bass Pro. Has the rail system and he could use all the military gear that he already owns. Before anyone complains about all the gear, he is a soldier. Did you get to try a HMR .17 yet? Nice varmint rifle. If I could i would own a live fire Gatling gun mounted on a carriage and a Willys Jeep with a mounted period MG.

I feel ambivalent about gun control. Too many idiots have guns. On the other hand the regulations target the wrong people. That said, nobody needs an assault rifle in civilian life. Nobody.
