Bird shot seems like a good option provided that it also does the intended job. I suppose that an intruder with blood all over his face and torso would conclude that it had.
All of our walls, interior and exterior, are concrete and steel so full penetration isn't a fear. Missing chunks and blood all over the place would freak out the Mrs. I want to avoid causing death if possible because the belief in ghosts is prevalent here.
Loaded but not pumped seems like a fair compromise. A loaded revolver with the chamber open might too.
I always advocate buckshot, simply because it does the same job as birdshot, but better. What are the odds of a criminal being on really strong drugs in Thailand? That would impact my choice. A guy who is extremely high will likely not feel the birdshot, so you have to injure him very, very badly. I've heard stories of militant addicts that took dozens of rounds from a 9mm before dropping. Shot placement, of course, is everything. With your average criminal, though, I don't see a problem with birdshot - taking dozens of high-speed pellets to the torso tends to make one reconsider their decisions. If I were you, though, I'd keep a round of buckshot in behind the birdshot, in case it doesn't work.
That's the way we keep our shotgun, loaded without a round in the chamber. My dad found a clever way to keep it hidden but within easy adult reach for the occassions when we have our younger cousins over. I just disassemble and hide my guns.
