two story chicken coop?

Im trying to save space and well a little money. Could you do a two story chicken coop with ramps? So the chickens could get to the second story? Would that allow more into the coop or does the same rule apply, 4-5 sq per bird?

I am going to be so over run with birds this spring!!!

My chicken coop is kind of two-storied. I built a "loft" along the back wall. It's about 2 feet or so off the ground and about 2 and a half feet wide. I have two feeders, a nest box, and two roosts up there. There are three, hinged doors along the front of the loft with clear, plexiglas inserts. The center door has a access hole and a ramp for the chickens. In the winter, the doors are all closed, but in the summer, I leave them all open.
This loft has added 32 square feet to living space. I highly recommend this kind of set-up.

A 2-story chicken coop is a good idea if you can have access without having to crawl in. If you kept it on the smaller side and had plenty of access panels. I also have a similar set-up to what Laura16002 has. It works well and I made sure it's only 1 arm length deep.

Someone on here had a 3 story coop! It's in the coop pages, but I can't remember the name! They were 3 "condos" one on top of the other, maybe 2x6' each? and each one had a pop door that led to a seperate covered outdoor run via long ramps. It was VERY cool! I think they kept a seperate banty breed in each pen.

I'm wanting to do a second story in my barn coop. I still haven't figured out how I can do this and still be able to get up there to clean it.

I'll probably be doing something like this myself. I took a long hard look at the space available in our garage and realized that any coop I built in there would have to be narrow as all get out, and since I wanted to rout the girls out an existing window anyway a tall narrow coop suits my purposes perfectly.

Well I have gotten chicken fever, ha ha. I have about 25 chicks running around in my brooder down stairs that are about 6 weeks old and I have a bunch coming in the mail from Ideal. Some are going to my friend. I will have to downsize obviously but I want to be able to pick some good ones. I will have about 75 chickens..............before every one lectures me, I live on a 2000 acre ranch and have a huge chicken coop already, but just wont hold that many. I don't plan on keeping that many, but I was trying to get some show quality birds.....so you know how that goes. I let my chickens free range during the day and the other animals around keep them protected during the day. I have a three room coop right now. The very inside room is about 12X12 and its insulated with about 8 nest boxes. The other two rooms are just lined with chicken wire (and are about 12X12 or maybe a little bigger) and offer no protection. I am thinking about insulating them and giving them all seperate doors so I can keep my flocks some what seperated by breed as I will have frizzles, silkies, cuckoo marans, white leghorns, barred rocks, silkied feather EE, regular americaunas, Old English, Barred Rocks and RIR......I am planning on having my husband build another coop that is a little closer to the house that is about 10X10, but I was thinking maybe to have it more than one story or have lofts going up and just next boxes on the bottom floor. so there is enough room for a good number of chickens. I

My husband built one... he put little rung going up like steps for the chickens to get to the second level where he put the bars for the chickens to sleep in. The nesting box is on the first level with room to walk out to their run.

Now, ALL the chickens want to get on top for sleeping! As high as they can get. So eventually they will all crowd on top... may not save as much space as you think.
