I have two 2-week old chicks. And I know it’s too early to say for sure, but I’ve been making guesses since I got them. So what do you think?

First is Elvira. She’s a silver laced Wyandotte feed store sexed chick. She *should* be a pullet. She’s the smallest chick in the group and her legs aren’t any bigger than anyone else’s, so in that regard she appears female. But her comb is also the pinkest and very wide. I’ve only had SLW hens. I don’t know when their gender specific feather patterns are noticeable. The last pic shows Elvira next to her “sister” Pamela Vorhees who is a splash laced Wyandotte.

The next chick is Carol Anne. I hatched her. She’s a black copper Marans x Barnevelder mix. At hatch, her comb was dark which typically means pullet for the chicks from this rooster. But the darkness has faded and now she’s suddenly one of the larger chicks with decently thick legs. Her comb is what I consider to be in the middle at this age- not “probable pullet small” and not “definite cockerel large.” It’s still very yellow- no pink or red. The last pic shows Carol Anne and Elvira together.

Come into the light, Carol Anne.

I think these are too young to tell for sure, but you asked for guesses, so I agree with sourland at this stage.
This way if we have hopefully guessed wrong, it will be a pleasant surprise.

Updated pics in case anyone wants to change their minds or if more people want to guess. I’m staying hopeful but am highly suspicious…

These chicks are now 5 weeks old, and I’m just as curious as I was before.

Here’s Carol Anne

Her comb is still yellow and not overly developed. (Pic 3 her comb looks orangy pink but that’s from the sun). Her wattles are very pink. She’s the largest chick in the group (but they’re all different breeds so that’s apples to oranges). Her legs are similar in size to the rest of the group.

Still thinking cockerel for Carol Anne?

I just realized my pics of the second chick, Elvira, are a week old already so I’ll snap some freshies and update.

Here are updated Elvira pics taken at 4 and 5 weeks of age.

Her comb is bright red, her legs aren't very yellow, and she's the smallest chick in the group. Aside from the color of the comb, all other signs point to pullet (including the fact that she was sexed as a pullet) so I'm leaning more pullet on this one, now.

Any new guesses?
