Tylan Doseage???

I have a smaller flock of mixed breed, 6.5 month old hens and 2 roos that all seem to have either CRD or Infectious Coryza. They don't have a couple of key symptoms for I.C., the swollen faces or crusty eyes, but the clear fluid from their nostrils does have a distinctly unpleasant odor. They are all underweight also.

So, my "Avian Specialist" vet is getting me some Tyan, I can't find it at any of the local feed stores. I am going with injectable, it seems to make more sense than hoping they drink enough of the water soluable.

First question...Can i give the injectable to them by mouth instead of an injection?? I think I have read posts here about that and I would be much more comfortable doing it that way intead of trying to give each one a shot and not poking them somewhere that will do them more harm.

Q2...I have weighed/guess-timated their weights...What is the correct doseage per lb. per bird?? How many days??

My vet was saying 2 times a day for 2 weeks of dosing...that can't be right??? Isn't the dosage time 3 days then no eggs for two weeks after the 3 days are done??

I don't want to have to buy way more meds than I need...55.00 for 250ml or mg bottle(i can't remeber what she said now)

Your getting hosed. Sorry to say it. Tylan 50 injectable is 1/4 to 1/2 cc once a day for three days for a heavy hen. Many people will skip a day in between. Injected into the breast or under the neck skin. It's actually pretty easy to do.
That much Tylan that they are prescribing will probably kill your chickens the first day. If they are supposed to be getting you the 250ml bottle then it is probably the Tylan 200.
Most people use the Tylan 50 or the soluble type.
We sell Tylan 50 100ml bottle for $9.45 plus shipping. A 100ml bottle will last you a really long time.

The dosage for tylan, as per the Merck Vet manual, is 35 mg/kg, twice a day orally or IM. It tastes horrible, but you can indeed give it orally. If the birds have improved after 5 days, give the meds for an additional 2 days (total of 1 week). If they are still looking miserable after a week, continue for a total of 10 days and they should be good as new. And I believe you can order it online - not sure, as we can't get it over the counter here in Canada.

Baytril works well too - 15 mg/kg, twice a day, orally or IM for 5-7 days.

I gave my birds .5cc in the breast every other day. They range from Seramas to buff orpingtons. I did give the smaller birds less that the bigger birds. I sat down on some stairs, put the birds upside down in between my legs, and exposed an area of the breast. I just stuck the needle in about 1/4in or even less. The only birds that jumped or made a noise were the Seramas. The other birds didn't care at all. They are all better now. I only used for 3 treatments. Good Luck!

they want me to give...

3-4 lb bird 0.2 ml (40mg) tylan 200 2 x per day for 7 days

5 lb bird .35 ml (70 mg)

6+ lb bird .40 ml ( 80 mg) same as above

is this correct??

I would rather do the Tylan 50 1 x per day for three days by mouth...What is better??

Does this sound like I.C to you...they sneeze, cough, shake their heads and have stinky snot...sorry, thats gross

My initial vet bill was 75.00 for office visit and 32.50 for fecal exam...ouch!!

The dosage sounds right as ml and cc are the same. So it is right in the 1/4 to 1/2 cc range. But the quantity is way more than I have ever heard of anybody giving their birds. The dosage is for Tylan 50 and most people have great success with a 3 day treatment. Usually after the first dose most of the smell will go away. then by the 3rd dose they are looking a bit perkier. It will take a few days for them to clear up completely so don't expect instant results. We had two girls just go through this and I only gave them 2 doses and both recovered nicely.

Does sound like Coryza, but obviously, I can't know that for sure. Sulmet is usually given for Coryza, as well as Tylan. A large white bottle of Sulmet is pretty cheap, about $9-11 and lasts a long time. Tylan is 1/2 cc and can be given in some pinched up skin on the back of the neck.

I am assuming the Tylan 50 is stronger than the 250, so maybe thats why the 2x per day...I wish they could get the 50...
I really just want them to feel better and start putting some weight back on.

I believe I need to sanitize/sterilize my hen house and feeders, waterers, etc. Should I do this during or after treatment is finished..?

Also, how long till eggs are ok for people, after the last treatment??
